What does it mean to end an email like this?

'I could say more, but I think I had better not, as it might prove hurtful.'

Someone I know sent en email to me that ended in this line. I admit that I sent them one which they said that they 'found hurtful'.

What does 'hurtful' mean in this context?

Do you think that they will ever speak to me again?
