Physics or Further Maths?

In my Sixth Form, we have to pick 4 subjects. I will choose biology and chemistry because I want to study medicine in the future. I will choose maths because I really enjoy the subject. For my fourth I dont know if i should pick Physics or Further Maths. I love both of them.

Also I definitely cant see myself studying a subject other than the maths and sciences. I have no interest in other subjects at all.

I'd say Physics...as medicine is not hugely maths based..shows a bit more breadth I guess?
Many unis like essay based subjects as well to show off your skillset...worth bearing in mind (especially as you have to choose four and not three subjects)
Biology and Chemistry I'm sure are required by almost all UK universities to study Medicine, so in order to keep your options open, I think you've made a great decision! From what I've heard both of your possible 4th options are perfectly suitable also - which do you like more? That and possible unis you're interested in might influence your decision. Many universities may have their own A-Level requirements, so make sure you double-check these on their websites to see if your choices fit with any universities you have your eye on. For example, Cambridge requires Chemistry and two from Biology, Human Biology, Maths or Physics, while Brighton and Sussex suggest an arts or humanities subject for aspiring medics to broaden academic horizons. I wouldn't worry too much about that specific 'requirement' though - taking such a subject that you've said doesn't interest you isn't the best idea and won't really mess up your chances of getting into top unis. Just do a bit of reading up on specific requirements, maybe. Best of luck!

As others have already said, both Physics A Level and Further Maths A Level will open doors and be perfectly good 4th options for medicine. I would advise, if you enjoy it, Physics as this comes in handy for certain specialisms and the medical physics optional module would definitely be worth taking as part of the A Level if you got the choice (or may even make for some interesting further reading). That being said, Physics is difficult conceptually and if you are a very gifted mathematician, further maths is also a brilliant option. Ultimately, pick which one you’d enjoy more and get the better grade in, but I would advise (if you like them equally) for you to pick Physics, as particularly by having Chemistry and Maths A Levels as two of your other options, they will complement each other nicely and all require a similar mindset and skill set. Best of luck!

Yes, i was leaning more toward physics too but I've started to worry maybe doing chemistry, biology, physics and maths would be too much? How would I have time for that? Also i enjoy Maths much more than Physics and I feel like it Further Maths would be easier for me and much less time consuming.

When i spoke to my careers adviser in school she told me to pick physics because its much more impressive, and Maths and Further Maths are seen as essentially the same thing by universities :s-smilie:.
I would definitely say physics. I am currently an A2 student and have applied to medicine. I chose 4 subjects and my 4th was further maths. I think further maths is for people who know that they want to do maths at uni. A lot of medical schools only look at one subject between maths and further maths. I think physics would lead to a lot more different options if you change your mind and don't want to do medicine anymore as there are a lot more uni courses that want physics.

very true...also FM is NOT an easy A Level!
Physics is probably more useful for medicine, so I'd probably recommend that over Further Maths.

I couldn't even do an arts subject for GCSE, let alone A-level😂 . I definitely want to pick either Physics or Further Maths, I'm just finding it hard do decide between them.

Which unis are those?

pretty much most...and most of my med friends had a mix
if you love further maths, do it. You're doing bio and chem, although it is preferable to do physics. Do further maths since you seem to enjoy it and it will be much more chill.

I'm sure its not easy, but I think that I would struggle more with physics than with FM.

Thank you! I think I will choose Physics. It's just the workload that im worried about :s-smilie:. All my teachers give the impression the there is so much to learn and say how doing even 1 science is a lot of work, so i cant imagine how i'll do all 3??

thank you! do you think the workload would be manageable?

I don’t take the three sciences and maths, but can tell you that four A Levels is hard work and you’ll need to be very self disciplined and really must enjoy the subjects you’re doing. But if you do and you work hard, there’s no reason why you can’t get great grades and into a medical school of your choice. It is possible! Best of luck.

(Also, if you’re in Year 12, it’s very late to be changing/starting subjects, which leads me to guess you’re in Year 11. If so, best of luck with your GCSEs, and remember to work hard and focus on those before you worry about A Levels, as they are pretty crucial for medicine! You’ve got this though, good luck!)

I'm probably a bit out of date, since I did A-Levels several years ago. But bio/chem/phys/maths was a common combination back then.

Workload depends on your own personal strengths.

do you think it would be difficult to get accepted into universities without a mix of subjects?

I had thought most/all didn't really have a preference as long as you complied with their subject choice requirements.
