What is the private/non-nhs market like for anaesthetists?

Just curious if its possible/what its like to work outside the NHS system. Is it hard to get a private job? What is the pay like? Do most people work for the NHS and then do some extra shifts for a private clinic? Thanks!

Well, every operation done in the private sector will need an anaesthetist! There's only really a market once you get to consultant level, though. Most of the consultants I know do it maybe 0.5-1 day a week alongside NHS work, It may be possible to do full time private work but as I work in the NHS I wouldn't meet the doctors doing that!

I think if you subspecialise in chronic pain it can be quite lucrative, doing nerve blocks/joint injections etc.
