can there not be 2 hydrogen bonds on the right hand side double bonded carbon?

Just remember that Carbon makes 4 bonds. Thence it can only make a double bond with another carbon, and then 2 other hydrogens. (in the middle of an alkene branch). In your bottom diagram, your carbon is making 5.
