I’ve been told that I should read into my interviewers research interests and what they’re specialist in however other people have told me I result don’t need to. Can anyone clear this up for me?

No need. It might be comfortable to know if your interviewer is a specialist in something you want to talk about, but they aren't expecting you to discuss their research with them, that's not the point of the interview.
