What's more important achieved A-Levels or GCSEs for American unis?

Do achieved A-Level Grades supersede GCSEs for the admissions process to American universities? I know it's broadly the case here in the UK but given that GPA is sometimes calculated by GCSEs I'm not sure how it works state-side, specifically for institutions such as NYU and UCLA.

they both count, but of course achieved (and even predicted) A-levels will carry more weight. How much more is an open question, it depends on colleges etc. They basically like to see consistency or improvement over time. US GPA (for US students is normally equal-weighted across the years).
Also check out the pinned fin aid thread- UCLA does not give financial aid to international students, and NYU is notoriously stingy- if you can't afford a quarter of million pounds for your studies...
