Studying literature in a foreign language

I'm planning to apply to university to study languages next year, and I'm hoping to do quite a lot of cultural modules focussing on literature. I was wondering whether people currently taking languages would be able to describe how they have found studying the literature. I'd be particularly interested to hear from people at Durham.
Do you read things in the target language first, or do you give it a quick read in English to get an idea of what's happening before you tackle it in the original? And what are university's expectations like in terms of how easily you'll be able to access the text in another language?
