Is WGHS (Wolverhampton Girls High School) any good.

Hi there, I am looking for anyone who goes to or has attended WGHS. This is due to my sister being accepted into the school, and I want to make sure she has the best education and pastoral care possible.

Thank you in advance

The pastoral care is okay and the education is good. Most of the mean girls leave by the end of GCSES so the sixth form students are pretty chill. A lot of them are very unhappy and stressed however, as the sixth formers are not treated well by the school (even tho teachers are chill) are babied a lot and basically given no benefits
As for secondary students, most of mine and my peers experiences has been all over the place. Political beliefs are really heavy at WGHS and they will be pushed onto your sister so be aware of that. About 80% of the school is gay also. There is a lot of drama and the girls environment is pretty toxic. However pastoral care are pretty good with dealing with a lot of it. Education is top tier throughout secondary. Clubs are pretty scarce, at least at the moment but they are looking to improve. A lot of stress is placed on the girls

Could you please expand on what you mean by the sixth formers not being treated well?

Also I picked economics A Level so I only have three places to go in my local area. WGHS, Colton Hills or Dudley Sixth. I don’t like the vibe of Colton Hills so I don’t wanna go there. So it’s between WGHS and Dudley, do you think it would be better for me to go to Dudley?

Thanks so much! You’ve been so helpful

It’s just that a lot of them are babied by the school and not given any freedom at all. They are not allowed to use their phones at all, wear coats / hoodies inside, or use their own devices instead they have to use these slowwwww school computers that are like prehistoric. though compared to dudley, i think just because the teachers are good teachers wghs might be more beneficial and the students at wghs are definitely very motivated and clever which will aid you in your studies. It’s your decision, you may not have as much fun at wghs (who knows, maybe you will) but you will do well in your studies

"...and they will be pushed onto your sister so be aware of that. About 80% of the school is gay also." is this serious?

Unfortunately I am dead serious. I know it’s just odd for a school, but trust that this school isn’t like a normal school in these regards. Wokeness is rampant and the school pushes it upon students most of all.

Okay as someone who has been at wghs for years, the whole everyone is gay there is very incorrect, yes there is a higher percentage in comparison to a co-ed school but this is a trend seen at many different same sex schools, this is similar to what happens in prison where girls think they have no other option, I will admit that wghs is full of political views which majorly impact the different cliques in school but its very easy to find people of similar mindsets. Sixth formers are treated differently than the younger years in terms of what they can do, the devices are they supply aren’t the best however you do have the option of bringing in your own device

Pastoral is quite bad for those suffering with long term problems, with many people’s information being spread by the pastoral team. They encourage the gossip in school and it is a massive problem that they need to sort out

My daughter got accepted into Wolverhampton Girls High school and she is in sixth form. She says the girls are nice and the teachers are nice and she really likes it there and the school has improved overall.

I will admit that this is the general experience for a good majority of the sixth formers currently (my year group, despite the fact that I have now left) however I still get complaints from my wghs friends, within the sixth form about the extreme toxicity of certain members of the year group, these typically derive from homophobia and ableism. There’s also been quite a few times where I’ve gone near wghs to talk to my friends in which I have caught nasty looks for. I will admit the current sixth form is an upgrade from the last year y11s, but to say the overall toxicity is the lower than a comp co-ed school would be a massive lie

The school has barely supported my daughter whilst she has been struggling in certain subjects, they are only interested in high achieving students and claim their success off the back of these students and their own hard work, this is nothing to do with the schools own input. We were promised help and support from teachers that never transpired, the extra support prior to exams that my daughter was told was compulsory for her to attend also never transpired. As she was not an A/A* student they were not interested. This was obvious from the first set of mock exam results in year 12.
The headmistress is not visible at all, we have never seen or heard from her, neither has my daughter, the newsletter is barely one or two lines of communication about what happened in school that week that can be found from the list of events in the previous weeks newsletter. I can quite easily say this and compare to my sons school (he has just finished yr 11) where the headmaster is a constant presence, can always be seen around school and writes a full newsletter and ‘pause for thought’ every two weeks. What a contrast! I wish we had sent my daughter elsewhere for sixth form and have no doubt she would have been better supported and achieved more. We chose WGHS instead of staying at her previous school based on its reputation, we were very wrong. I would not recommend at all.
It may be a different experience from year 7 and if you have private tuition at home as well throughout as this is what will guarantee the results that they want - this is the case for a lot of girls that go there. I can say this as a lot of our neighbours have done this with their girls who go there.

As someone who was there from y7-y11 the ‘compulsory support’ is very unhelpful, unadjusted or just doesn’t happen. Before GCSEs had started I had asked for support for certain subjects, was told I’d be granted it and it was not provided. Shame to see that the school has yet to improve on this
