How would you answer this essay questions third year uni student?

I'm a media and communication student the question is a 3000 word essay question as follows...
Examine the societal and cultural significance of the identity of a celebrity of your choice, incorporating
analysis of both of the following elements:
1) How this identity is constructed, commodified, and presented to the public and
2) How this identity functions when under threat from scandal or controversy in either the
personal life of the celebrity or a crisis within the wider world, and the implications for celebrity
culture

Any ideas on what celebrities would be a good choice well known that me a girl would know of, and how to go about writing this, and what theories would be appropriate?

i failed this once before so am scared and i dont really get the way my tutor teaches and im starting to feel silly as just arent getting what i need from her so was wondering if anyone can offer more guidance then maybe ill understand it better.
Jesy Nelson?

If you run a search in Google Scholar you will see that quite a bit has been done on her. This should help you generate enough material to write the essay.

Hey there @Iamamazing22 !
I'm a Media student studying at Sheffield Hallam and we're currently studying about power relations and so I feel I could help out with this. For this to be a successful essay, it's got to be someone that's easily recognisable and plays up to the public. Might I suggest someone like Donald Trump? He presents himself in this way and thrives off controversy as well as responding very irrationally when under threat. If that doesn't interest you then it might be good to analyse someone who's been a victim of cancel culture. For example, JK Rowling used to be this national treasure and now since she's been cancelled she's known for not having a filter on social media and an 'outcast' in society. If you'd like to go for a less controversial route then try someone like Greta Thunberg. She's presented as this young intellectual girl and then for your argument of her being under threat you could talk about her recent spat with Andrew Tate.

Some other examples I can think of that may help you:

Boris Johnson (Boris is actually his middle name, he uses it as his first to appear more relatable)

Matt Hancock (you could talk about his recent stint on I'm a Celebrity and how he's trying to break away from politics and move into celebrity culture)

Margaret Thatcher (taking voice coaching lessons in order to sound less shrill and down-to-earth)

Piers Morgan

Any reality star to be honest - How do they construct themselves so they appear relatable and so their audience trusts them with recommendations? How do they have a direct influence on consumerist culture? If you'd like specific examples take into account the likes of Joey Essex and Gemma Collins, they play on this "Essex Culture" and the stereotypes of Essex being dumb and ditsy to gain a following. Your scandal and controversy here is when they get caught in something like a non-disclosed ad. or a negative story comes out about them in the press and how they respond.

Stephen Bear - he plays on the fact that everyone hates him and plays up to this 'rich, white-man' culture that makes him appear arrogant and unlikeable with the way he dresses himself and his spray tans and his wet-look gelled hair. He continues to say controversial things to get a reaction out of people. How has his recent trial impacted society ? You could talk about how revenge porn has now been brought to light in mainstream media and the stigma of women speaking on their stories has been broken thanks to the trial.

If you were doing a politician as your example, your societal significance would be them trying to appear more relatable and down-to-earth to further advance their political career. For someone like JK Rowling you could suggest it's all about press and marketing. Greta Thunberg is supposed to be this voice for the people character. When the question says constructed and commodified, it's asking you how does this person play up to their character in order to influence other people? In what ways does this person present themselves to get a reaction from the Media? So for Donald Trump your answer there would be he thrives off controversy and getting people talking because everyone wants to know what controversial thing he's going to say next. He presents himself physically as this bleach blonde, tanned caricature that we all easily recognise. The same could be said of people like Piers Morgan, as much as people detest him, he gains his following and people read and watch his content because he thrives off controversy. Make sure to include examples of how they've done this so you could take quotes from interviews of whoever you choose. People like Donald Trump have had many an article written about them. Academic sources don't just have to be papers on GoogleScholar, you can take online articles from magazines and reference them.

Hope this helped! Let me know if you have any more questions.
