Making the Most of Your First Year: Our Top Tips

Are you currently in your first-year or starting university this September? Here are my three top tips for making the most of your first year from my own experience:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s important to remember that lecturers are there to help and you should make use of their time wisely; after all, they are experts in their field and will make you a better student with their guidance. The lecturers at Swansea are always friendly and willing to provide their support.

2. Connect with your fellow students. First year is a wonderful opportunity to socialise, with prospects such as joining a society, sports club or university scheme at your disposal. At Swansea University, I made the most of the Freshers Fair and Welcome Week at the start of the year to learn more about these possibilities. Something to remember is that all first years are in the same position as you and are likely looking for friends too!

3. The most significant lesson I learnt is to try to keep in mind what you would like to do in the future, or what you are most interested in, so that you can tailor and personalise your university experience to get the greatest outcome. There is a strong emphasis within university to not only teach students the course content, but to also prepare students for the next step after they graduate. For myself, I was able to make the most of the Employability Hub’s facilities at Swansea University to not only improve my CV and learn how to write a cover letter, but to help me find work experience. Using facilities and resources that the university readily offers, such as this, can result in a more fulfilled experience.
