Re: grades

Can someone help me workout what mark I need in my exam. I got;
65/100 in assignment 1 which is worth 40%
14/20 in assignment 2 which is worth 20%
? / 200 in assignment 3 which is worth 40% .
The overall percentage I need to pass is 40%

Converting those percentages to decimals (just because it seems more "natural" to me), the above can be stated as:

((65/100) x 0.4) + ((14/20) x 0.2) + ((? / 200) * 0.4) = 0.40

So then we need to resolve the parts we can, and then re-arrange what's left:

(0.65 x 0.4) + (0.7 x 0.2) + ((? / 200) * 0.4) = 0.40
0.26 + 0.14 + ((? / 200) * 0.4) = 0.40
0.40 + ((? / 200) * 0.4) = 0.40
(? / 200) * 0.4 = 0
? / 200 = 0
? = 0

In other words, Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 have already given you enough marks to achieve 40% overall. If you were to score 0 / 200 in Assignment 3 you'd end up with exactly 40% overall. :smile:

Perhaps you should set you sights higher than a simple "pass". Are there percentages which will earn you a merit, a distinction, etc.?
