Hi There grades 6 in English will be a problem only for Oxbridge Universities and I think Sheffield and I stand to be corrected by anyone. I think the trend in here is a high UCAT > 2800 and you will be in good position to get many interviews. There are 34 medical school and you need to apply for 4 of them to get one offer. Just apply strategically by avoiding heavy depending on GCSE grades like Cardiff and may be Liverpool and KCL. A very high UCAT > 3000 will even increase your chances many folds. good luck.

Hi again for UCAT first use youtube to have a feel of what past students say about it then you can look into MED ENTRY and medical portal. There is so much information about everything you need including university choices

Neither Oxford nor Cambridge have any formal GCSE requirements. Sheffield only require a B6 in Eng Lang. As you say, the key is to apply strategically as some med schools need all 8s at GCSE and some have zero requirements. OP’s grades should be enough to give them lots of choice depending on their other stats
First thanks Dr GANFYD. You help my daughter 3 years ago with some advice. she is now halfway in her medical studies. my son is year 12 and wants to apply to dentistry so my advice above on English language was based on dentistry requirements of grade 7 as per their website.. please confirm if I am mistaken about dentistry in Sheffield as well.

Hope your daughter is enjoying her course! I don't know anything about dentistry, I'm afraid

Birmingham have required all 8/9s in their scored GCSEs, unless contextual, in recent years. You need to come back and ask the question when you have your UCAT score, then people can advise

Hi, I'm a dent applicant here. Just to add to what others said your grades won't severely stop you. I had a friend with grades like yours for medicine and she still got interviews. Make sure you check university entry requirements and try to avoid unis that are known to favour students with 8s and 9s. The medical schools council release a very useful guide each year summarising the entry requirements of all medical schools in the UK. They haven't released the 2024 entry yet so I have attached the link for the 2023 one:
