Honest opinions on Lboro uni?

Hey, thinking about applying to Lboro uni and want to know how existing students feel about living there? What is your social life like? What are the people in general there like? I want to know about any stereotypes and whether they hold some truth or not.
I heard the uni is also sporty but I’m not sporty nor follow sports. Will I not fit in?

I will attend an open day, but I just wanted to ask on here too because I want unfiltered, unbiased opinions from existing students who aren’t told to sell the uni.

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're thinking about coming to Loughborough!

I'm currently in my first year here so I thought I'd tell you a bit about my time here so far.

Before I came to Loughborough I was worried about it being a small town and there not being much to do. However since I've been here I've been pleasantly surprised - I can safely say I've never been bored here. Most of my time in the week is spent on campus as there's plenty on as well as just relaxing with friends. There's also the nights out the union puts on in the week but I'd say at the weekend you do tend to go out in town more. There are plenty restaurants and pubs in town to go out to eat and drink and there are also other things to do like going to the cinema.

Loughborough is however a market town and can't offer what a city can but usually if we want more of a city atmosphere we just get the train to Leicester or Nottingham which both take less than 20 minutes and is very easy to do. The thing I appreciate about Loughborough being a smaller town is that there is a nice community feel and it really does feel like a student town. When you go out you always bump into someone you know which I've found really nice and it makes you feel like the campus extends to the town.

In terms of the stereotypes of it being a 'sporty uni', Loughborough does have world class sports facilities which does mean that there are a few elite athletes that are here on sports scholarships but there really aren't many. Most people I've met don't play any sport or just do sport more casually representing their hall. I really wouldn't worry about not being sporty and coming to Loughborough as there's plenty to do on and off campus that has nothing to do with sports.

I hope this helped and if you have any questions feel free to get in touch

Hi again,

It’s good to know that you aren’t bored there. What types of things do people typically prefer to do when they go out? Is it mostly just clubbing and stuff like that, or are there also people who do less party-like stuff? I’m asking because I don’t see myself going to clubs all the time, but I still want to socialise as much as I can but in more chilled-out environments I guess.

Also (I know it’s not really an important thing) how’s the dating scene like there? Do people get into relationships or is it more just hook-ups and stuff? I know there’s a wider gender difference than other unis so I was just wondering.

Hi there,

There definitely are people who enjoy going out clubbing but there are also lots who prefer a more relaxed less party like environment. I think you tend to gravitate towards people who have similar interests as you anyway so I wouldn't worry about not wanting to go out partying all the time. There are plenty of events on campus that are more relaxed like the events put on by the union and also the socials organised by societies so there are plenty of opportunities to socialise. There are also really great opportunities to get involved in for example this summer, through the uni, me and my friends are going on a road trip to Dubrovnik which was something I never thought I'd be able to do!

I would say again it depends on the people. There is a wider gender difference than other unis but personally I haven't really noticed it - I also think it depends on the course you do.

Just let me know if you have any other questions
