Are computing degrees worthless?

Hi, have computer science degrees losen their value due to computer science degree and normal apprenticeships?

What are your thoughts?
Hi! Sol from the University of Suffolk here

First of all I'll say that a Computing degree is a highly sought after qualification for many tech companies across the world. Whilst apprenticeships of course have their place, they are usually confined to one specific aspect of computing and therefore limits the amount of careers you can go into afterwards. Whereas a computing degree can be applied across a huge variety of careers.

Many graduate roles have quite large salaries and you can get into those straight from a computing degree. More specialised fields in computing such as Cyber Security for example have some of the highest salaries available to graduates, so I definitely wouldn't say that Computer Science degrees have 'lost their value'. Its just a matter of finding the right degree or you.

Many Universities offer degree apprenticeships as well as standard degrees. When considering your options I'd recommend discussing what possible avenues you can take during, or after your course. Some universities will be able to equip you better than others. Its also worth asking if your course would enable you to work alongside it in a relevant area. At the University of Suffolk, for example. you could take a paid placement whilst studying for your degree. You could also do a degree apprenticeship where your fees are paid by BT and you get paid a salary that increases with each year of study.

Ask different universities what they offer and see what computing options would be best for you!

A value of a degree is completely subjective to the individual, there are lots of things to factor in when deciding what pathway to take, if you feel you would thrive better studying a degree over doing an apprenticeship (or vice versa) that might be the best option for you. Look into what universities offer computer science degrees and consider the modules/student life/graduate prospects etc. then compare this to an apprenticeship to help make a decision! hope this helps.
