Difference between foundation year and normal degree?

My firm choice that I want to go to offered me a foundation year on top of the degree course after I didn’t meet the entry requirements however my insurance choice is a normal 3 year degree. So I want to know if foundation year is worth it for my top choice which is rhul.

If the 'Foundation' Uni is the one you really want to go to, my advice would be to accept this offer.
They still want you - and the Foundation bit will not be mentioned on your degree certificate.
Hi Cloudster

Congratulations on receiving your results.

I completed a foundation year for my course after not getting the correct entry requirements for the course. For me i was glad i completed the foundation year as i found it a big step from A-levels to uni but with foundation year i learnt the skills i needed to succeed at uni such as referencing as also had a introduction to the course material which allowed me to gain better grades in my undergrad course. It bought my grades up from 50 in foundation to 70 in my undergrad course.

Regarding a foundation year for yourself it depends if you want to put in the extra year of the course and also which university you want to go to out of the 2 choices. If you fancy the first choice then i would say complete the foundation year.

Best of luck in your choice. Feel free to ask me any questions you have on foundation year if you decide to go through with that option. 😀😀

Thank you! Do I have to pass foundation year before going into first year?

Hey @Cloudster, I hope you're still feeling proud of yourself today. Be proud of all the hard work you've done, and get excited for a new exciting chapter in your life!

There's lots of advantages of a foundation year, they provide you with a solid basis for future undergrad study, you complete the year feeling fully prepared to start a degree, having made new friends and feeling integrated into university life. Have a good look into the foundation year programme at RHUL, the curriculum, teaching methods, support services, etc.

Take the time to weigh your options and make the choice that feels right for you

I wish you the best of luck in making your decision!

If you really want to go to your preferred uni, I would accept the offer with the foundation year
I did a science based foundation year a couple of years ago, and it helped me transition and get used to uni without the pressure of first year. It also meant I was able to focus on other things, and topics I found harder during first year because I was much more confident on the topics I already knew, although we did learn a bunch of new stuff as well.

If you're curious about what foundation years are like I did a Grow your Grades blog (it was during covid but pretty much everything is in person again now)

Hi @Cloudster

Typically, a Foundation Year is an extra year of study at the start of your course (Year 0) which leads onto a full degree programme (Years 1, 2 and 3).

Here at Winchester (so other unis will be similar), in Year 0 you study a set of modules from across your Faculty which are designed to develop your academic and practical skills. This broader focus in your first year introduces you to studying at university level and provides you with a better understanding of your own degree pathway and related disciplines. You will experience a variety of teaching methods including lectures, discussion-based seminars and independent study. You will also receive support to boost your academic skills to prepare you for onward study.

In Years 1-3, you specialise in your chosen subject area and can begin to choose optional modules to further tailor the course to your interests.

If you're desperate to go to your top choice, you might want to consider a Foundation Year or a different course at the same uni. If you prefer to jump right into the course then your insurance choice (or another uni chosen through Clearing) might help you start your journey sooner.

If Winchester is ever an option - give us a call on 01962 827234  all the best whatever your decision.

yes you are required to pass the foundation year before going onto first year however you get given the skills and support from tutors to pass each of the assignments which you are being given.

There are pros and cons to both but if that's your top choice I'd say the extra year is worth it. Take some time to weigh up your options, maybe check out each uni's website and social pages to get a feel for them and then go with your gut!
