Hi there,
In my experience it's been an actual key rather than key card, but there are many different accommodations so I can't be certain they all use actual keys. Alongside having a key in one of the accommodations I stayed at we had a circular electronic tag that you just put next to the lock pad sensor to let you in (which was super convenient and easy).
