How do I send private messages to users on the student room

As the title states I have made a few posts and replied in a few threads but I still can’t message privately to users

Click on their username and it comes up with an option to send a message

Yes I have done that but then I am a redirected to a screen that says I have to say hello and post in forums

Then do that.

Private messaging capabilities are privileges which need to be accessed through regular usage of the website to avoid abuse by spam accounts and bad-actors.

If you are a genuine user of the site then you will unlock that privilege quite quickly.

Additionally usually it's recommended to post on one of the public forums rather than privately messaging someone, as you will get a variety of viewpoints that way.
