Lancaster University Private Accommodation First Year

I'm wondering if anyone decided to stay off-campus in their first year in private halls rather than uni halls and how you found it/would you recommend it? I'm looking at ensuites if that matters.

I'm wanting to go on a tour of the uni's accommodation, but I'm not massively impressed by what I've seen on the website or heard about the shared spaces. However, I am concerned about not making friends if I don't stay on campus.

Any thoughts? 🥹
Hello!
It's great to hear you are interested in Lancaster! In my first year I stayed on campus as it makes making friends easier and its a great first step of independence as you are living on your own but still have college porters and security around if you have any problems, which I found very reassuring. To touch on your issue of shared spaces, I lived in a town house in my first year which is shared with 12 people but you only share a bathroom with one other person. I really enjoyed this as you have a shared living dining space which is great for eating together and watching movies in the evening which is a great way to get closer to your flatmates, I would also recommend going to see the accommodation types you are interested in if you are able to visit them as sometimes the pictures don't do them justice! I would recommend also talking to people who lived in private accommodation to hear both sides of the story but I hope this helps!

Daughter did a townhouse, and no issues at all in sharing . 4 on a floor sharing 2 bathrooms was fine. plus it prepped her for when she was in a landlord owned accommodation where there was 8 of them sharing 2 bathrooms. She did do an ensuite at Penny street for year 3, and chancellors shared for year 4.

If the accommodation format is the same as when she did it in 2020, then you have to choose one accommodation in one college and one accommodation in another college, so just choose both ensuites in both. Her 3rd year Penny street flat of 12 had two first years, some other years and some phd, so it was mixed. The two first years they were fine, they did have friends round on a saturday evening, but was quite respectful to the others and not being too loud after 11pm.

Hi @Kidscove,
I lived in a shared bathroom flat on campus in my first year, and really enjoyed the ease of campus, being close to your lectures and friends ect. Different types of accommodation have different shared spaces, with townhouses having the largest shared kitchen/living area which makes them really popular. Also the ensuite accommodation tend to have relatively big kitchens but do lack the more separate sofa area, which you get in a townhouse. I'd recommend looking around the accommodation on campus at an open day or offer holder event, so you can see it for yourself. Or alternatively, there's a YouTube video on this site showing you around the on campus ensuites. Bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms - Lancaster University.
Hope this helps!

Hi @kidscove

I know you've had a few replies regarding this but just wanted to give you another experience.

In first year I lived on campus with 8 other people in my flat so it was quite busy (and messy) however my friend lived on campus in a 4 person flat so if the number of people and sort of the mess of the shared spaces rather than the size is a cause for concern for you then perhaps look at one of the flat options with less people!

In terms of making friends, I only really speak to 1 of the 8 people I lived with last year, all my other friends I made on my course and joining the clubs and societies. Lancaster has over 160 of them so by joining them you will meet similar people and make friends that share a common interest, talent or love for something. Also, there are lots of different events and things going on you can get involved with that the colleges put on so again these are great opportunities too!

Hope this helps,

Hey @kidscove
Its entirely up to you if you want to stay off campus. Lancaster is a very student town and pretty much every other place in town is a student accommodation.
Loads of my friends stayed off campus in first year and some even commuted from places like Preston, Manchester, Bolton etc.

A few popular student accommodations are: Caton Court, Luneside, Penny Street, Damside, Yugo, but there are many more.
All these have en-suites and based on location and prices you can decide.

Hope this helps

Hey,
If you haven't Found the place that you're looking for yet, I'm a 2nd year Lancaster uni student that has a place in one of the hello student - classic shared rooms.
The rent is £144 per week for 44 weeks meaning that it does not include the summer if you want to spend it at home.
The room itself is ensuite with both toilet and shower.
The kitchen is shared with about 14 people but its massive with 3 fridges, lots of storage space and a full sofa, tv and table to socialise around.
its in the centre of town, penny street, and is on the third floor so you can overlook everything from your room or the kitchen.
If you're interested and would like any images just message me or have a viewing in the Lancaster Hello Student office.
