Lancaster University School of Mathematics facilities

Hi, im applying to Lancaster University School of Maths college (in Preston). The website doesn't say much, so I just wanted to ask anybody that currently attends, what sort of facilities does the building have? What sort of food do they serve? Id really appreciate if anyone could let me know as much info as possible about the facilities and the student life (food, study spaces, social spaces, etc.) thank you!

Are you sure about the uni? Lancaster Uni's maths department is on the campus in Lancaster. Do you mean the University of Central Lancashire which is based in Preston?

These kind of Maths school tend to be very small so wont have much facilities. They do have contacts with local colleges and you would be able to use their facilities. Exeter was one of the first specialist Maths school and has contact with Exeter College.

Ring the school and ask to speak to somebody about facilities. Due to the small numbers having attended this school you might not find anyone on here able to help.

Here is a link to Exeter to see if there is anything there that might be able to help.

Students who have not selected to study Physics AND Computer Science may study for one subject at Exeter College. Students may elect to study any of the AS, BTEC or A-level options available at the College , subject to timetabling, and will have the option to continue with this subject in year 13. Alternatively, students may select to take an enrichment option from the College’s “Extend” programme; this may not result in a qualification but will broaden students’ experience.
Exeter College is situated just a few minutes’ walk from EMS and is an outstanding provider of post-16 education. EMS students will have full access to the extensive resources and facilities of the College and will gain a richer 6th form experience by working alongside College students and staff.

Hi there,

I am a 4th year Mathematics and Statistics student at Lancaster University. I have previously helped out at events where LUSoM have visited the University. While I have never been there personally, I have heard the buildings are very modern and some of the social spaces are similar to what we have at the university. They also do have an Instagram that have some photos of the facilities. The college runs an extended project in maths with the university where students have contact with our lecturers and are able to use our library facilities as well.

Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Regarding the extended project in maths, what sort of activities do students do, and how often do the students visit the university?

Hi again,

The project that I have seen is where they study a topic unrelated to their curriculum in depth in small groups with the aim of making a A1 (I believe that is the correct size) poster. They came to the university for a briefing session where they learnt how to use the library's online system for research and to meet their project supervisors. They were scheduled to have weekly meetings with the supervisor as well (may have been virtually though). I think they have been back other times but I haven't worked those events so I can't be sure.

Hi I study at LUSoM, we do not serve cafeteria food but every student has access to cooking facilities i.e ovens, air fryers unlimited coffee. We also have a pretty loaded vending machine and we have a very cheap Greggs outlet and lidl bakery 2 minutes walk away from the college. For study spaces there are multiple on i think all rooms ( there are whiteboards free of use all around the building) we have library and a table tennis room for social
