Can’t decide MSc Choices Computer Science

Hello,

I’m in my final year of comp sci at a Russell group university.

I have some offers that I’m considering for some part time MSc programs:

- Artificial Intelligence MSc @ University of Huddersfield (Online)

- MSc Data Science @ City, University of London (in person)

- MSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence @ Northumbria University (online)

(And some others like Glasgow, Aberdeen but these are too expensive)

And furthermore I’m considering the online masters from:

- MSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence @ University of York (online)

- MSc Artificial Intelligence @ Bath (online)

- MSc Data Science @ Birbeck, University of London (in person)

- MSc Advanced Computer Science @ University of Hertfordshire (online)

- MSc Computer Science @ Essex (online)

The problem I have with York and Northumbria though is that they supposedly outsource the teaching and that it is very low quality and difficult to follow.

The courses at Huddersfield and Hertfordshire and are not outsourced, so they sound the best but their low reputation concerns me.

The London ones in person are possible for me to commute to.

I guess I’m looking for some advice, thoughts, reviews (if you’ve studied any of these programs), recommendations.

Thanks

Hi @Jared223,

Great to hear you're considering Herts for our online MSc Advanced Computer Science course 🙂 - we thought we'd highlight some of our credentials so that you can be assured of the high quality teaching, student experience and internationally recognised qualification you would gain here:

⭐️ Herts ranked 2nd in the UK for overall satisfaction and UH Online is also 2nd for graduate employability in the most recent Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES, Advance HE, 2023)
⭐️ In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2021), 90% of computer science research at Herts was ranked as world-leading, with Herts now in the top 25% of all universities for research impact
⭐️ 93% of our postgraduates are in work or further study following completion of their degree - we are proud of the strong employment prospects that a qualification from Herts offers

Do read our course page to find out more, and you would also be most welcome to join our next open event in March to speak directly to our academics: you can book here.

Hope this helps, but do let us know if you have any specific questions.

All the best with your decision!

Good Morning Jared,

I'm glad that you're thinking of applying to City, University of London for a MSc in Data Science!!

Something that City offers its Data Science students is the ability to participate in our professional internships programme supported by the Corporate Relations & Employability Unit. You can undertake your MSc project in an industrial or research internship over an extended period compared to regular projects.

You will have the opportunity to specialise, so once you graduate, you can apply data science to any sector from health to retail. And by engaging with researchers and industrial partners throughout your course you can develop your knowledge and skills within a real-world context.

I hope this has helped clarify what City offers its Data Science students.

Kind Regards,
Iris - Politics Student at City, University of London

What's the end goal? What is the purpose of doing a masters?

If the answer is "because I want a better chance of getting a job" then you need to do your homework. Which job and what skills are they looking for? Are they even looking for masters graduates?

What a ridiculous reply.

That wasn't my question at all, yet you assume I have not researched this and thought about my options.

How rude. If something is ridiculous, it is your question. Do you honestly believe someone can give you a first hand objective opinion of all the courses and institutions you listed?

Do your homework. Have you been to open days at each of those places? Have you spoken to the course tutors at each of those institutions? Have you emailed former students through their messaging platforms to speak to people who have been on the courses? Have you contacted future employers in the field to find out what skills and knowledge and if doing a masters is a viable route into employment?

And if you have done all of the above as you suggest, why are you still asking the question?

No, but I think people with experience in one of the listed programmes can provide me with their thoughts and advice.Yes, to all of the things you mentioned. I have done my homework, actually. I'm still asking the question, because I can always find out more, I can improve my decision that I will make based on additional information factors. It sounds like you're just incredibly rude and inconsiderate from the get go, which was why you decided, very pathetically, might I add, to comment on my post, telling me to 'do my homework', without even knowing the extent of what I have already done. It's people like you, who just decide to give absolutely no value to a post, and in fact, take away value by being an absolutely negative person, for no reason, that is wrong with this world.

What is wrong with the world? Well there we agree. Good luck in your quest. I hope you find what you are looking for.

You still haven't said what you are looking for. You might have done your homework but you haven't said what the outcome was so people can help you. These are very different courses.

I have said what I'm looking for: "advice, thoughts, reviews (if you’ve studied any of these programs)" as quoted

What is the direction you want to follow so knowledgeable people can help you? People who study specific courses very rarely come and advise, it's mainly uni reps on a completely unrelated field. However, there are plenty of others who work at universities or work in the industry.
