Me too!!! I'm so surprised I've found someone doing modern languages at southampton let alone both French and Spanish!!! I did/am doing a level French, but not Spanish so I will be doing it ab initio

Oh cool! Congrats on the offer by the way!! I’m excited but also nervous!! I took a gap year so I’m trying to get as much practice in as possible

Very late but hi! I'm gonna be studying Spanish & Linguistics this year ))
I've been trying to find language students and it's practically impossible lmao (it's rare to find someone studying humanities yet alone a language 😭) I'm hoping the numbers won't be too small when we actually get there tho

Yeah hopefully!! I’ve been to a couple of open days and there seemed to be quite a lot of languages students helping out so fingers crossed that means there’s usually high numbers!

The BA, I did consider the masters but I just preferred the BA option. You?

If you don’t mind me asking which accommodation have you applied for?

At first I applied for the BA but then I asked to change to the masters! Now I'm just praying I get the grades I need because it's higher requirements 😅

I haven't applied yet cause I'm still debating over my third choice but I'm putting Wessex down for my first two preferences! Wbu?

I applied for Archers as choice 1 and Wessex as choices 2 + 3, really hoping I get Archers as it’s the most affordable option!!

I'm considering putting Archers as my third preference cause it's cheaper and closer to the campus which is a bonus but I'm not sure cause I've heard it's quite small and I feel like I'd get on better in a larger environment? I'm very bad at decisions lol

If you don't mind me asking, what did you do on your gap year?

Can I ask how many content hours is typical for the course? I've heard it's quite low for humanities but I don't know how many I should be expecting

Ah ok. I think I’ll prefer the smaller environment (not too keen on vast numbers of people hehe) but yeah I like that it’s closer to campus.

I work full time in a primary school!! It’s been really fun

Hi @acatthat

For Modern Languages and Linguistics, the content hours are a lot lower than other courses, as you’re expected to self-study and undertake a lot of reading. Linguistics courses will have around 18% contact hours and 82% independent learning. This equates to around 8-9 hours of in person sessions per week.

Hope this helps!

Yeah I can totally see why the smaller accommodation is attractive (the fact that its the cheapest is defo a bonus lol)

Your job actually sounds amazing!! I'm interested in teaching (tho defo not primary school for me personally - small children are kinda intimidating ngl) so maybe I'm a little biased tho... is that the career you're interested in or just like an experience sort of thing?

It’s honestly not that bad!! I was worried that working with small kids would be really tiring, and while sometimes it is tiring, most of the time it’s just really fun and rewarding!!

It’s an option for after uni, my main plan tho is to go into the military (specifically the Royal Marines Band Service) so I’d maybe do teaching after that or as a backup in case I don’t get in!
