Pubs and Bars

Broomhill

Hall Bars eg. Endcliffe Bar, Tapton, Ranmoor cheap pint/snakebite and move on.

Fox & Duck Union owned bar (so its cheap, ie. a pint for £1.60), can sometimes get some locals in, but is the official pre-bar for Gatecrasher One on a Monday night.

The York Scream Bar, don't forget your Yellow Card (£1 start of the Year), for discounted drinks/food.

The Broomhill Tavern Nice little pub, good friendly mix of town/gown.

The Place Directly opposite the Tavern. Quite a nice one, 4 guest ales

The South Sea Now privately owned and more expensive compared to other Broomhill pubs.

Nottingham House On Glossop Road, on the way down the hill. Quite local, It's student owned and run and has a bit of a beer garden for the nice nights out. Every saturday is the 'Sure Radio' night, come down and party till 1am with sure radio DJ's playing all genres of music!

Bar One Union building. Cheap shots and pints always available. Have a game of pool.

OK so now you'll be at University tram stop.

West Street and Division Street

"The Harley" Not actually on West Street but next to HSBC on the corner of Glossop Road. Open till 1 in the week, and 3 on fri/sat. Gigs from time to time (see their homepage), great club nights also, Club Pony is definitely worth a visit.

The Cavendish Scream Bar; see York re Yellow Card; this Scream Bar however unlike the York is HUGE compared.

Varsity Don't forget your V-Card (£1 for the Year) for cheap drinks offers (about 25 % off), based on 2 floors, and has a huge widescreen projector screen for sports/music videos. Busy, but very good for a night out.

The Swim Inn Shhhhh. Weatherspoons.

Walkabout Australian sports bar, ours is good, live music a few nights a week, two floors, the usual mix of many TV screens, showing different channels, and a wide variety of music. Yellow armbands for discounts

Vodka Revolution Never before have you tasted such a wide variety of Vodkas. Certainly try the six-stick (£8 for 6 shots), don't just have the same shot all the way along. This place also serves some of the wildest cocktails.

"Bungalows and Bears" Late Bar of an indie/electronic persuasion, it's worth going in the daytime mon-fri to get a regulars card, then it's much easier to get in in the evenings. homepage

Frog & Parrot Home of the legendary, former world record holding, Worlds Strongest Beer, the Roger & Out (circa 15 %), that they can only serve in 1/3rd pint glasses. Drink three in a night and you get a certificate, this one is only for the die-hard ale fan as I didn't like the first sip. Also had an offer on 10 Vodka & Red Bulls for £10 this year which wasn't bad.

Yates' Always popular, ever faithful.

S1 Near the Cavendish, S1 is great for chilling out post lecture ... Inside are some comfortable leather sofas, and If the weather is good, it has a quiet beer garden area ... Food is quite good, and drinks aren't too expensive either ...

DQ Late Bar Either called 'DQ' or 'Late Bar' by the majority of people, is located just off West Street, adjoining Cha Cha's indian buffet restraunt. Contrary to it's name, the venue doesn't open much later than it's nearby competitors - however for some special nights such as the Urban Gorilla Afterparty it has been known to be open until 6am homepage

Gatecrasher 1

RIP :-( Gatecrasher 1 partially collapsed due to a fire and will be demolished.

Their Website will have updates

Embrace

Formerly Kingdom (Mingdom), but it's still basically the same.

Monday - Bedlam - 5 rooms (some are far bigger than others) but pretty much all musical styles are covered to some degree. Drinks are cheap - 1.50 double vodkas, bottles of beer (fosters?) and other bottles

Wednesday is Hallam sports club social night

Avoid at the weekend, when prices are high, and the locals come out to 'play' ...

Embrace's Homepage

Corporation

Alternative venue. Home of some rock and metal, indie, hip-hop, ska etc across 3 rooms. If alternative is your sort of scene, then theres normally something being played in one of the 3 that you'll enjoy.

Wednesday is 'school disco', Entry is free before 11.30 if you're wearing school uniform (£5 if you're not!), and drinks are £1 for double vodka mixers all night . Corporation Homepage

Leadmill

Venue is a great night out, 3 rooms; Monday night SHAG is worth a night, as is Cheek/Teenage Kicks on a Wednesday, Thursday night is Naughty, Friday night Love Royale Love is classy. Then there is The Sonic Boom on Saturday. Genuinely can't say much of a bad word against it.

Monday is SHAG, the *ahem* "legendary" student night. Expect it to be rammed and drinks start at 60p (XXXX), 80p (Fosters/Carlsberg) and vodka is probably cheap too. Theres an indie room for all you cool indie kids and the main room will be a mixture of cheese/dance/pop etc Doors 10pm-2.30am

Wednesday is the new TEENAGE KICKS. Again rather cheap, used to be known as Some Love but now its been re-invented. To be honest the music is anything that the DJs want to play so expect a good micture of music. Doors 10:30pm-2am £3NUS

Thursdays brings Naughty.

Friday: Well now we're on to Friday...or ROYALE as it's better known. Described officially as "3 Rooms Of Pop, Indie & House" its the start of the weekend. That said drinks prices are typical weekend prices but there is the added bonus of 2 bottles of carlsberg/XXXX/fosters for £3.50 and double vodka+mixer for £3.50. Doors 10pm – 2.30am £4NUS/£5

Saturday: Last but not least, the Indie fest that is SONIC BOOM. Mian room is the indie room, and also the place to be for weekly giveaways that include free gig tickets, cds and posters. If a bit of soul is more your thing check out the other room where you can expect to hear all the classics, and if that's not your thing there's always the small bar with its electic mixture of well...anything. Oh...and it's open till 3am. Doors 10pm -3.00am; £4 (nus) / £5

The Plug

Brilliant venue if Embrace sounds like its not your thing.

Monday - Easy!- Three rooms of party anthems, indie, classics, RnB and dance make Mondays a great night.... Different themes and guests each week keep it nice and Easy sleazy. Recently brought back the monday night Easy barcrawl, starting at Varsity on West Street heading to Plug

Thursday - Jump Around - is brilliant, three rooms of 90's classics, upfront indie and Twisted house music. Weekly themes such as binbag ball and moustache party, party games on stage. Not to be missed! £1.50 for a double vodka and mixer, stella is £1.50 also...

Weekends There are big name DJ's for proper dance music fanatics, the likes of Eric Prydz, Pete Tong, Mr Scruff, Pendulum and Jeff Mills have played there since its opening. Resident DJ's are ex-Urban Gorilla, Pete-Tong constantly bigs up the names that play at the Plug on his 'Essential Selection' show on Radio 1 ...

Flares

Down the road next to walkabout, 70's themed club. Never go on any night except tuesday, it'll be full of oldies. A good laugh though, 3 bottles for £2 if I remember rightly.

Boardwalk

Currently the most important live music venue in the steel city, an insane number of great bands playing all the time, a little pricey though.
