The Student Room Group

So i got my offers......

So i finally got all 5 of my offers, All for computer science + year in industry

Leicester.............AAB
Royal Holloway...ABB
Brunel ................BBB (320 points)
Loughborough....ABB (But they rejected me....and moved me to Computing and management :frown:
Nottingham..........BBC

So i was thinking of putting Leicester as my firm, and nottingham as my insurance, would this be a wise choice?

I took psychology, geography, ICT at A-Level and AS maths, and i am predicted 3 A's () surprisingly.

I just wanted some input as i only get bias responses from family saying stay in london!

Yeah considering your choices, that would be your best bet , when do you have to decide?

i know nottingham is offering you the lowest offer but they actually look like the most respectable uni ???
If you're predicted 3A's surely you could put better than trent for your backup?

Be dangerous and put Holloway or Brunel down :p:

Yeah they are the more respect uni, however they dont have a good as computer Science department as the other unis he has mection, but if miss few grades on his exams he still has a brillant uni to go to  so proable the best match he could have

How long did it take Loughborough to get back to you? I applied but I'm not hopeful - I reckon they will reject me or offer me Computing with Management as well. :frown:

Quite a few people seem to have got C&M after applying for CS - I hear the CS is very theoretical/Maths heavy, I wonder if that is why?

Meh, never mind.. Once you discount Loughborough I think Leicester & Nottingham are your two best choices - I would stick with them. Leicester has a respected and friendly CS department and from what I have seen the campus atmosphere is great.............. Nottingham has a great reputation generally. Can't go too far wrong with either IMO.

Don't listen to this advice, it's terrible. Predictions are based on a year and a bit of how you perform well in classes and end of assessment tests, as well as many other things. The majority of which do not carry over to exams properly. Exams are very different from the way you are given your predicted grades in most cases.

The OP is obviously highly intelligent, but even the most intelligent people can have a bad exam, for reasons beyond their control.

I think what I'm trying to say in a very long winded way is the majority of people who don't get into university are the ones that were too 'dangerous' with their insurance choice. If the OP is happy with Nottingham and wouldn't mind studying there, then why the hell shouldn't he have a safety net? Using your logic if he's predicted 3 As he can get in to his Firm so why should it apply to his Insurance?

It didnt look anything special when I went, just an old building with a room full of PC's.
My teacher looked over the Loughborough course outline and said it has the best modules for employability. Not to mention Loughborough also has university experience of the year awards.

Coming from person who is doing foundation a degree is not very reliable, If the OP was in doubt that he could not achieve the grades for Leicester then i would put Loughborough as a firm. And by the way what does Loughborough have :s-smilie: rooms full of PC's! What do you expect?

:s-smilie: so your teacher knows what people are looking for in the job market? is his job not safe LOL

i don't mean to be sarcastic but when u come across with a load of ****, have u actually looked at the course content for Computer Science considering they don't do a Foundation year?

Do you ever post anything remotely positive about any subject??

What exactly were you expecting a computer lab to look like?

They graduated from Leicester, and went into something computer programming related.

http://www.le.ac.uk/ugprospectus/courses/sciences_foundation/main.html
Which would specialise into Computer Science after year 0.

Loughborough is good apparently and Sussex too. I dont know much about the main degrees as I was looking at the foundations but from what Ive researched they both have good departments.

Your Opinion does change over time? :erm:

I feel fairly certain that Leicester will be my firm but it depends on what kind of offer I get (if at all) from Loughborough.

I'm going back to Leicester for a UCAS day next year and if I got an offer from Loughborough I would do the same before making a final decision.

edit:
When attending Loughborough for the open day they spent a lot of time bigging up how important they felt mature students were and what a valuable contribution they made to the University but a breakdown of the figures shows they take less 'mature' learners than Leicester AND the admissions tutor has been less than helpful when myself and others on my course have contacted him for advice; that is what makes me doubt I will get an offer and puts me off the idea of studying there a bit....

So having visted both Unis once already I certainly felt the staff at Leicester were more friendly and welcoming....... but taking a second look is the only way to tell I guess, maybe the guy at Loughborough was having a bad day.

Looked more aesthetically pleasing then Leicester (Seeing as you'll be spending many hours in this room). Good set of PC's tribooted to run Linux, windows and Mac OS.

Nothing wrong with a foundation, its still competitive, for example Loughborough has 10 applicants per place on the foundation with the minimum requirements at DDC. Anyone from DDC-ABB+ could apply. Leicester's was not a dedicated foundation year so I opted against that and put Nottingham Trent instead.
