Any Biology Offers?

How do you think Durham compares to Warwick? I notice Warwick has a higher ranking for Biology (7) according to The Guardian, whilst Durham is at rank 40 - but I'm not sure how much that counts for also taking in mind Durham's prestigious history. When you say you have the option to choose any module you want, what do they include out of interest?

haha, yes...the Guardian. I had a offer from Warwick too, but they only recently raised their criteria from BBB to ABB.

Warwick is a strong university, but its specialism is not in Biology. Check the complete guide of Uni, and biology at Durham was top 5 in 2009 (my entry), now its 6th, still very worthy.

The guardian is a left wing paper, and Warwick has a excellent track record for bringing state school kids in, while Durham has more public school kids than Cambridge. Hence why its lowly ranked (Durham is ranked 14th in the Guardian, while 4th in the independent, and 6th in the Times - Warwick is ranked 3rd in the Guardian and considerably lower in the others).

So basically these tables are quite meaningless. Warwick is a good uni and I won't smear it, but so is Durham =)

If you get a average of 55% (very doable) in your first year, as long as the time table works, you can do 4 biology modules, and two modules in any department, in level 1 or level 2 (without prerequisites). (direct entry to Nat Sci is AAA!)

So at the moment, I am doing 4 biology modules at level 2, and one level 1 geography module and 1 level 1 business module. Pretty cool huh ; ) and those level 1 modules count for my degree!!! I am still doing a 3 year course but I can do easier modules haha!

and you get a BSc . (Hons) Natural Sciences degree, arguably a more prestigious degree =P but you do give up your research project and no year in industry.

I am not trying to discourage you to do biology, what I am saying is that if your not 100% certain you want to do pure biology for 3 years, you always have the option to do some other stuff too ^^, Warwick ain't gonna give you that. Also Warwick alcohol is expensive , in Durham, a triple shot can be as cheap as 1 2o (in Jimmy Allens).

Both have strong reputation, but Durham is well renowned in the establishment, such as the Big 4 and Banking.

Hey guys, I received an offer for straight Biology in November - was surprised by how quickly they got back to me! Anyone firmed Durham? I have St John's College too, woo!

Changing to NatSci isn't guaranteed as they have a pretty strict quota....it's certainly not impossible but definitely isn't guaranteed, even if you get 90%! (Plus they usually look at your school grade profile when deciding who to let swap into NatSci.)

But first year biologists can do a module from any other department (as long as it timetables), as long as they've done A2 Chemistry.

Last year I got AABBC (bio/geog/maths/physics/critical thinking).

Predicted AAB in bio/geog/maths this year. Worried, lots of people have better grades than me!

I think I'll be lucky to get in because i applied for veterinary science too (got
rejected for all 3 places - hah!) so my personal statement was a bit varied between veterinary and biology :|

Heyy I applied for C101 (biology with industrial placement) but I don't know if you're counting that as 'straight biology'!

I got my offer through fairly quickly, but then I applied quite early (I applied to Oxford)

I didn't even get an interview at Oxford so it just shows how different the selection criteria must be for different unis! :P

Yes that counts, I applied to the same course :P I assume you got pretty amazing grades, but what subjects and grades did you do/get? I'm not sure where I stand with getting an offer really, I thought my PS was pretty good and my grades are above the typical offer. I suppose it is Durham and it follows that it is competitive (especially this year!) but I wonder what is taking them so long to make a decision

For AS I got As in Bio, chem, maths, RS and critical thinking
My predicted grades are As in bio chem and RS and an A* in maths.
I'm sure your PS was fine (mine was a vagueish summary of my Nuffield bursary project and a 'humerous anecdote' about being chased by cows whilst doing DofE), sometimes unis take a while to get back to people, even really good candidates! What college did you apply for?

I'm not bothered though. Even if they gave me an offer I was planning to reject them anyway.

hey; sorry on the rejection, even if you didn't want to go there!
Can i just ask if you applied for C100 or C101 and what your predicted grades were?
i always feel so nosey asking people about their grades; sorry :P
