The movement of substances against a concentration gradient using ATP

give two examples of active transport?

I said - H+ ions in companion cells

K+ ions actively transported in the root hair cell



what is the role of nuclear pores?

So mRna produced can leave through these nuclear pores and attach to ribosome for protein synthesis or translation.

what is used as a transport medium, to maintain pressure and an exchange surface?

Transport- Blood..(some ppl said plasma)
Maintain Pressure - Vessels (i wrote arteries)
Exchange surface - Capillaries, capillary beds

how do you use a spirometer to measure vital capacity?
i think it said tidal volume but something along the lines of - breathing at resting rate, wearing nose clip., breaths in, chamber falls, pen draws down, breaths out chamber rises, pen draws up

what did you draw for the spirometer?
just waves, ten extra.

how could you use a spirometer to measure breathing rate?
did it say breathing rate or oxygen uptake, anyway i answered for breathing rate... stupid of me.

what risks do you have to consider when using a spirometer?

I said, sanitised mouth piece, and healthy person ie not asthmatic

why do the atrioventricular valves close?

+pressure in ventricles than atria, close to prevent backflow.

describe the loading of assimilates into phloem?

toooo long srry.. but something along the lines of - H+ ions pumped, using atp then back in with co transporter moves through plasmodesmata etc...


how are seive elements adapted?

less cytoplasm, less RER, Golgi etc...

what is the importance of staining chromosomes?
Flopped this =/ but - cell material isnt coloured, so we need colour to stain so we can see chromosomes and stuff

what is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?
Meiosis = not genetically identical to parent cel..
which ones did you write for source, sink or neither?

i wrote in order. neither neither sink..
which i think is wrong its. sink neither sink.

where are meristem cells found?
i wrote root and stem... im pretty sure it said organ when meristem cells are found but i might be wrong since many ppl said no =/

what was the second question in the paper on? LOL. i was about to answer this and thought, what does she mean what is the second pper on =/?

I put Mineral (Na+ ions) ions into root hairs
and glucose into ileum for the active transport question.

Anybody got any ideas on the 'why does the AV valve close' question?


pressure in ventricle becomes higher that left atrium so the valve slams shut.

I didn't think that was a question? There was one on tidal volume and how a spirometer tracing could show the amount of oxygen intake?

what raw mark out of 200 is needed to get an A? from my calculations, if 30/40 for the coursework is an A, then 136/200 is an A, that's like 68%?! is that right???

It's better to look at UMS rather than raw, as they can change significantly every year. For F213, 34/40 raw is an A, 31/40 raw is a B etc. and this converts to 48/60 UMS for an A and 42/60 UMS for a B.

FYI 240/300 UMS is an A grade.

If you get an A in this paper it it 72/90. in the unit 2 it is 120/150 and in the practicals it is 48/60 for an A overall. so to get an A you need 240/300. :smile:
Raw marks differ every year depending on how hard the easy the papers are.

Pete's correct. I believe that 32, 40 and 64 were the A boundaries in the most recent results for all three exams. That's 136 out of 200, so UMS withstanding, 140-145 should secure an A, and even as low as 130 could potentially get you an A.

Can someone please check my answers and give an estimate how many marks i got on the questions that i'm not sure about?

- the active transport question: i said it's a non passive process used to bring large substances, or polar substances in to the cell that are too big too diffuse through the phospholipid bi layer (forgot about ATP and against conc gradient... feel like an idiot)

- the one where you had to say what transports etc - i said - blood transports, exchange surface is the lungs, and valves control pressure ( i think all of these are wrong, fml )

- and for how seive elements are adapted - i just wrote they have no organelles, allowing transport of assimilates, do you think i'll get any marks for that

- also the calculation question, if you just put 18% and not18.00 % do you think you'll lose a mark????
