I'm not trying to be controversial or anything. All I'm saying is that when it comes to the structure of HMV workforce, its very unnormal compared to all the other retailers. If you look at retailers like WhSmith and Wilkinson their workforce is very multicultural black, white, young, old etc but HMV is mainly white, tend to go for more females and young.

@Owen: I'm not accusing every HMV employee lacking knowledge but there are a lot who simply don't know things. Why does HMV have this ethnic monitoring form then? Its not only race they base their applicants on but also gender and stuff.

At least people like me and many others who are on benefits actually trying to look for work. Hate it when people in general and those job centre staff accuse people like me of being a scrounger and accusing us of being the problem. Its about time the country and corrupt government admit that there are just not enough jobs and job market is at an all-time low. Everything including education system in UK is all wrong.

Its not the unemployed that's the problem its the businesses that are the problem.

I don't know if you're deliberately trying to wind me up but here's a direct quote that is put into every single hmv job advert posted on our website.

“We particularly invite applications from groups which are under-represented in our workforce such as older, female and ethnic minority candidates”

I guess I'm still wrong though right?

What store are you applying for and how long ago did you apply?

Is HMV still a thing?

I thought it went out of business
Anecdotal evidence= It must be true!

Christ if I had a pound for every time I've heard this in the last year. You obviously don't read the news or get out much do you? hmv came out of administration in March 2013.

There was no need for the insult!

And meh, who even shops at HMV anymore anyway, most people stream their favourite shows/movies and illegally download music

I am not going to be specific and despite me being rejected recently they still uploaded that vacancy (gone now). I applied for it again anyway much better this time and straight to the product specialism.

One underlined - this just proves their workforce is mainly white. Of course they need to say that otherwise there will be suspicion but really they don't want such people in their workforce.

Company has no future anyway. Everyone is buying online. Online video services like Netflix, Hulu plus etc are growing in popularity and people are instead shopping for their entertainment on Amazon, E-Bay etc rather than HMV. Realistically HMV won' last in the next 10 years despite it being luckily brought out when it was on the verge of collapsing just like Blockbusters.

What's so difficult about a sales assistant? generally when I apply for jobs I'm getting more interviews for things like administration, banking, estate agent etc all much superior jobs compared to a nothing job like sales, cashiers etc. Just another proof discrimination is involved in places like HMV in my opinion especially in recruitment.

The one I applied for the manager even assistant looks to me as if he's/they are prejudice/bias so not surprised I'm getting rejected. Employees there are nearly all white, young and 65% of them are women all whom don't have a clue when it comes to games/technology section and haven't seen many films/tv shows. I guess the ladies are music experts.

That's more than enough info for me. There are only 4 stores left in London. 363 Oxford Street, our largest store with an extremely multicultural workforce. I know that because I worked with half of them. Selfridges, similar but on a small scale. Westfield Stratford, extremely multicultural, again I know a lot of people who work there. Finally White City, ironic. Again quite a mix of ethnicities there even though I don't know any of them.

So there are some facts. Feel free to once again disregard them and tell me I'm wrong.

Vacancies are taken down from the site after they gain a certain number of applications. Given the number of people looking for work this is obtained rather quickly. It doesn't mean the vacancy has been filled. How about actually walking into a store or phoning them up and speak to someone instead of whining and making excuses. Like I've already suggested twice.

To answer your last point. I wasn't denying the workforce is mostly white. Neither are the company. Which is the point of that quote. It is actively encouraging change.

Considering the UK is like 87% white British, I'm not really surprised.

'I'm not english and they're not hiring me, they must be racist!'

You clearly are as you assume because the OP isn't white he/she isn't English.

Just seen your other posts. That's it. I'm out. There's no reasoning with you. We're all racists. All of us. Enjoy staying unemployed.

Answer me this, what does it mean when your application has been processing for about a month? if your application is good enough then how long before they respond?

When I did my application although I had time to send it like 5 days later or something as long as you saved it, I generally hit the send button on the day the vacancy is shown on their website but does that mean they respond early or wait until that saved application date is passed? - hope that makes sense.

Of course. Before that new HMV takeover there were employees from all backgrounds but under this new leadership Hilco there has been seriously changes. That's the problem. Even the uniform changed. HMV use to have black t shirts lol now they changed it to pink lol proves that they are no interested in black/dark skin workers and prefer the females over males (pink shirts).

My name is John Blake. I'm black and I live in east London
Sorry, I've just seen this thread. I don't mean to bring the skeletons out the closet but having read through it, I am currently gobsmacked.
I work at hmv after applying for a 3rd time this summer.
I admit the the first couple of applications I filled out, were not worthy of employment. When I decided not to go back to college & looked for a job i'd enjoy I applied again.
I really took my time with the application and tried to show my personality (even mentioned that I cried when Groot dies in Guardians of The Galaxy).
I am a mixed race 18 year old. I work with people in their late 40s, lots of homosexuals, and people who are just genuinely interested in gaming/technology/music/film.
Hmv hire on the basis of how well suited you are for the job, not because of where you come from/ethnic bacground, your sexuality or how old you are. Honestly, we're not in the 19th century, Grow up

as for this comment, how the hell does the colour of the uniform suggest they're discrimination against black people?!😂

I know this is a troll thread but for others reading, I used to work in HMV and the staff was a mixed bag in terms of race, gender, age, and sexuality.

The UK was 87% white in 2011, but my store was less than 87% at the time.

Whenever we'd post a job ad in the window, we'd get 100s of CVs a day. At the time HMV paid more than the other minimum wage retail jobs in the area, so there would be more competition and probably more applicants with better experience and better quals, making it an even tougher role to get - relatively.

Glad to hear they are still going strong. What does HMV pay now per hour out of interest?
