BSc Government and Economics Course Choices

Hi,

I will be starting studying for the BSc in Government and Economics at LSE in the new academic year. I would appreciate some advice from past students on how to choose my options.

Would you advise me to do both GV100 and GV101 in the first year? A few people have suggested that I should do this, but I am very keen to do a history module (HY113 or HY116), in which case I would only do GV101 in the first year.

I would prefer to do GV100 first as it seems to be a harder course judging by the classification statistics, and the first year counts for little overall. However the course tutor said that, if I only do one of the two, I should do GV101 as it is a prerequisite for the second year compulsory course GV225.

The programme page states that I could do an outside option in the second year, but it is referred to an as 'approved outside option'. Is it likely that I would be allowed to do a history course for this? My understanding is that most students choose a second year government option here.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My choices for first year were:

GV101
GV100
EC102
MA100

I would advice doing both GV10s in your first year. Almost all government students do this, and it opens many doors in your second an first years. If you are strong quantitatively, you could consider requesting to do MA100. This is a very difficult module however, so further maths or an A* at A-level is necessary. And you have no choice between EC102 and EC100.

For second year my choices are:

ST102 (outside option)

Thanks so much for all the info! From what I understand, if I choose to do both GV10s in the first year then I will have a larger choice of options in the second year for the course I have choice over?

You say there are over 100 modules on the approved outside module section. Is there a list of these online that you could direct me to?

I'd also just like to ask your opinions on GV100 and GV101, how are you finding them in terms of content and difficulty?

Hi guys, I'm sorry to bother you as this isn't directly relevant but I need some advice and can't find anywhere else to ask this question:

I'm keen on studying govt + econ at LSE.

I got 10 A* at GCSE, 3A at AS (govpol econ geography) and 1B (maths) - I'll be dropping geography and predicted A*AA.

I wondered what you lot think my chances might be of getting an offer?
