Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy 2017 applications

Hello all!

Just wondered if anyone on here is applying for 2017 entry
I am applying to Teeside, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Queen Mary's and Cardiff.

I'm very nervous about the probable 5 rejections I am soon to receive...

How are your apps going?

Hi! Thought no one else was interested in dental hygiene. I would like to apply for 2017 entry but i live in london and have a family so am applying more local to queen mary and Essex. I also want to apply to kings and eastman although they are very hard to get into!
Why do you think you will get rejected? Do you have any dental experience? What qualifications do you have? What has made you chose this course?

Hello, thanks for your reply!

I think I will get rejected due to the courses being over subscribed and my lack of qualifications meaning I only JUST make the entry requirements. I've been dental nursing for two years in an NHS dental practice so know that I REALLY want this.
I'm studying an access to HE in science which I started in September.

I've been to various uni open days and all of them said it's nearly impossible to get a space and that most of the time they have to reject perfectly good applicants even though they match the criteria.

Cardiff for example has only 10 spaces a year and over 500 apply. Liverpool over 600 apply. Most of the unis follow this trend.

What about yourself?
Yes i was just reading previous hygiene threads from 2016 and 2017 and they sound horrific! I know several ppl who applied in the last 2 yrs and got in. One is currently at Sheffield and is doing well. I heard due to the cut in nhs funding that less ppl may apply in future but who knows. We can't let the horror stories crush our dreams and should still apply with hope. Have you got a dental nurse qualification? I qualified in 2010 and have worked ever since. Apart from that i have the gcse grades and an impression taking course. Im currently studying an access to HE in biological science.

One thing that is worrying me is my police caution

Hiya, I'm still a trainee dental nurse and I applied 1 week ago. I have an interview w/ teeside for Dec. Portsmouth didn't accept my application for dental hyg and therapy but they gave me an offer for Biomedical science. So am sure there is still a chance of you getting accepted.
I applied for Portsmouth, Teeside, Plymouth, Queen's Mary and Leeds.

Well done for getting an interview so soon after applying! Are you local to Teeside? Have you had much experience with nursing? What gcse's do you have?

Thanks  I'm actually not but my parent leave near. I live and work in Newbury. My experience in nursing is going to be 2 years in Feb. Got C's maths, english and double science and other subject. I guess am average in terms of qualification.

Did you apply yet or are you still thinking?

Okay, with my personal statement I just included things like why you want to apply and include your attributes that you would bring with you. For example leadership and wanting to be part of a demanding profession. I wrote a lot with my experience in dentistry and understanding NHS care. If you worked with specialist I would include that as well.

Good luck
Thanks for the advice ddd01!
Which university is your first choice?

Your welcome
Portsmouth was my first choice but they offered my Biomedical science which I am actually thinking of taking but I'm going to think about it more before making a decision.
With the hyg and therapy, my new first choice is plymouth but I'm waiting to hear from them.
