Access to HE-credits

On UCAS website from a university 'An Access to HE Diploma with all 60 credits passed, and a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. Distinctions must be achieved in at least 30 of the Level 3 credits'

The access to HE only has 45 credits (at level 3) so how am I supposed to get the other 15 credits? Do GCSEs count for these?

Many thanks
For my course, we have 60 credits at level 3. 15 credits are ungraded - they will just be marked as 'achieved'.
Also, some access courses have level 2 units, this could also be the other 15 credits.

My course (Access to HE in Science) is also 60 credits at Level 3 however 15 credits are from Study Skills and can only be graded as a pass/fail.
The other 45 are split between Maths/Physics/Chem/Bio and can be graded as D/M/P.

I think it's different for every college so my advice would be to contact the college, or if you're currently attending college ask your Personal Tutor or course leader.
I did Access to Humanities & Social Sciences last year. Access course is 60 credits total, breakdown was:

Study Skills 6 credits graded pass or fail.
Dissertation of 3000 words and a 10 minute presentation 9 credits graded Distinction, Merit or pass.
History 15 credits, first unit of 3 credits graded pass or fail, second & third units graded Distinction, Merit or Pass.
Sociology 15 credits, first unit of 3 credits graded pass or fail, second & third units graded Distinction, Merit or Pass.
Psychology 15 credits, first unit of 3 credits graded pass or fail, second, third & fourth units graded Distinction, Merit or Pass.

Depending on which awarding body your college uses, you might do 4 subjects instead of 3.

Hi! I'm very unsure about how credits work exactly and why 3 per subject/subject unit? Also, for example, 0/9 credits are graded for a dissertation. So if you get 9 credits, it was top quality? And how does that relate to disctinction, merit, pass grades? I really don't understand the reward system for A2HE, coming from an A-Level student.
I've tried to find the information to these questions ol, but haven't found anything yet, not even on the main website.
Could someone please explain?

Hi! Could you please explain how a student is assessed with: credits and distinction/merit/pass? How are they awarded and graded exactly, in both subject and 'Study Skills'? Exams, essays, assignments? Also, if you could also perhaps look at my previous post, it would help a huge deal!

Grade descriptors are given with the assignment brief.

Grade Descriptor: 1. Understanding of the Subject For a Merit your work or performance must: Demonstrate a very good grasp of the relevant knowledge base. Demonstrates very good understanding of the different perspectives or approaches associated with the area of study.
For a Distinction your work or performance must: Demonstrates an excellent grasp of the relevant knowledge base.Demonstrates excellent understanding Learner Guidance notes: Make sure you are familiar with the research that has been covered in class and that you have a clear understanding of each area. Extend your reading as directed using a range of sources.

Grade Descriptor: 2. Application of Knowledge For a Merit your work or performance must: Make use of relevant theories and shows very good levels of consistency and analysis.
For a Distinction your work or performance must: Make use of relevant theories and excellent levels of consistency and analysis Learner Guidance notes: Make sure you find supporting evidence outside of class material as this will enhance your grade.

Grade Descriptor: 5. Communication and Presentation For a Merit your work or performance must: Shows very good command of language (including technical or specialist language), syntax, spelling, punctuation and referencing.
For a Distinction your work or performance must: Shows excellent understanding of SPAG and Harvard referencing. Learner Guidance notes: Be sure to use correct technical language appropriate to study/theory. Proof read your work and be sure to use Harvard Referencing as standard. Use a range of sources that come from books, journals and websites and cite appropriately. Ensure you consistently write in 3rd person (Academic register)

Grade Descriptor: 7. Quality For a Merit your work or performance must: Your work or performance: Is structured in a way that is generally logical and fluent and taken as a whole, demonstrates a very good response to the demands of the brief/assignment
For a Distinction your work or performance must: Is structured in a way that is consistently logical and fluent and taken as a whole, demonstrates an excellent response to the demands of the brief/assignment Learner Guidance notes: Be sure to proof read carefully and demonstrate appropriate literacy skills and fully respond to all aspects of the assignment brief. You must order your assignment in a logical manner and ensure that you follow the general assessment criteria stated in section 7 in the student handbook.

Graded the same way for assignments and exams

Probably just best to ask your tutor/college as every college is different.
The easiest way to describe the grading is with entry requirements. If a university is asking for 30 distinctions, they require 10 (of the 20) of your assignments to be at a distinction. 3 credits x 10 assignments = 30. 30 distinctions.

Okay, that makes sense, thank you! And your previous post, where is that information lifted from exactly? Some numbered points were skipped too btw! Are all assignments essays or what forms may they also come in? And a Distinction = 3 credits? And in Access courses, they talk a lot about research, do we not just work/learn from textbooks as in A-Levels?

That information is from my own assignment briefs and those are the 4 grade descriptors my college picked, I think they can choose from 7.
You can do essays and controlled assignments in my college.
And no, all assignments have 3 credits. They are just graded to pass, merit and distinction.
They give you minimal information in college and you go out and find other resources for more information to get a merit or distinction, this can be from text books, journals, the internet.

Oh are you applying for Psychology too? Ah that's perfect. And congrats too!! Could I please ask which unis you applied to for Psychology and with which Diploma? It is very worrying because there doesn't seem to be A2HE Diploma in Psychology offered in my area ( I live in London - https://gyazo.com/f3b84655b9ced478e38e78966de86ed6). What am I to do? I'm sure they'll want me to take the Psychology diploma.

Edit:
For some reason Psychology doesn't come up in search results on Access website but Social Science, within the SAME college, does?

I'm doing a social science access course, there's no straight psychology ones because there has to be other units to make up the sixty credits. I'm doing sociology, social work and psychology. So you need to check if the access courses in the picture have Psychology units. Most uni's take access courses as long as you have GCSEs as well! I've applied for Uni of Liverpool(insurance), Uni of Sheffield(firm) Liverpool John Moores and two at Anglia Ruskin.

Oh that's so amazing! That's very odd as the access website does show Psychology Diplomas in search results but none in my area. Also odd is that a college that also offers Psychology in my area doesn't show up in Access search results (please see edited post ) For example this ( http://www.candi.ac.uk/courses/psychology-access-higher-education-diploma) offers 3 core modules, which is how many credits?

Probably 60 credits! So like before assignments are all 3 credits. so 20 assignments = 3 credits each (no matter what grade pass/merit/distinc) = 60 credits. All you have to do is get most of your assignments at merit or distinction.

Just extra information, I'm aiming for 30 distinctions for Psychology at Sheffield. So this equates to 10 assignments at distinction because 10 x 3 = 30.

Hahah, sorry I am trying my best to explain but when you start they will explain all of this anyway.

Yes and a great job you're doing, thank you. You're so helpful :3
I am so clueless currently. I'll keep you updated if it's okay with you

You study three core modules: Academic Study Skills, Psychology and Sociology. You will also choose one optional subject from: Economics, English Literature, History or Politics.

So you have 4 modules in total. Academic study skills will be ungraded assignments, so pass or fail. Things like essay writing, presentation skills etc... you likely won't be able to get merits or distinctions on these, just meet criteria and pass or not meet criteria and get a referral (you get a second submission attempt though don't panic)

The other 2 core modules along with the optional subject will be graded and worth 15 credits each. They may have multiple assignments in them, it's quite common to do 5 assignments per module worth 3 credits each, though some institutions may have more valuable assignments worth more.
