LearnDirect Access to HE - Veterinary Science

I am looking to do an Access to HE course in Veterinary Science, so that I can apply to do a Zoology degree. I have spoken with the university that I would like to apply to and they have suggested doing this via LearnDirect. I have confirmed with LearnDirect that I can acquire the correct amount of credits to apply to the University. But I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with LearnDirect, or this course? As I say, the university suggested it, so they must have had students apply this way, but I have read some pretty negative stuff, and all their positive trust pilot reviews seem to be about the online chat and help to enrol. I have seen nothing about completing courses etc. Any information would be great!

Which specific uni/degree that you want to do? Depending on this, the requirements you need to meet to get onto the degree can vary, including what sort of Access course that you shoudl do.

Learn Direct isn't the only company that offers Access courses. I haven't done any qualifications with them, so I can' offer a personal insight.

Hi,

I cant comment on the course as I havent used LearnDirect, but if your not sure about doing that, have you thought of doing a foundation year instead? I did a foundation year at my uni to start my Animal Behaviour and Conservation Science degree and because I did it at my uni, i felt so much more prepared when I went into my first year, as i was already familiar with how the university worked and how they liked us to reference. I would also add that doing a course online is much harder than doing it in person, it takes alot more effort to stay motivated and manage your time well.

I just wanted to give you another option choice, hope this helps.

I'm doing access to veterinary science as we speak. Only complaint so far is the time taken to mark submissions, but that's not too long. Taking about 4/5days.

I'm on unit 6 now, happy to help answer any queries if I can 😊

Thanks for your feedback, I actually ended up applying for an online access course in Science, Chemisty & Maths at a local college. Read too many negative comments about learn direct to risk it, but I am pleased you're getting on well with the course.

There are other vet science online courses - ones that accept the Advanced learner loan which Learndirect seem not to. I've just started one with East Sussex College.

I have asked my tutor for help but they haven't sent me anything that i don't already know.

Hey Dorris

I was wondering if you completed unit 9? I’m really struggling to understand what the requirements of the presentation are tbh.

Hi ladies,

I'm about to start my Access to HE Veterinary Science & Zoology level 3 diploma with Northumberland College, I was wondering if you could recommend any study books that may come in useful for me, the subjects will be: - Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Veterinary and Microbiology along with a few ungraded bits.

No - use the internet. You do not need textbooks.

I am on the Access to HE with LearnDirect now and recieved all 4 offers from the vet schools.
However, prior to getting on the Access to HE or applying to uni I would strongly recommend checking with each school that they will accept. This is the responses I have Aug 2024 for Oct 24 application:

Liverpool does accept Access to HE but LearnDirect is not on their pre-approved list. My application was considered on the basis of previous qualifications.

Nottingham does not accept Access to HE. My application was considered on the basis of previous qualifications.

Bristol have a Guaranteed offer policy if you apply with Access to HE. People on the forum said it applies to Ved Med as well, but I do not know. That said, I have recieved an offer from them.

RVC will accept Access to HE

Cambridge will not (one college said maybe, if you have 45 Distinctions and scored highly on their science test)

Surrey will accept Access to HE (they were the ones who recommended me LearnDirect in the first place)

I didn't check Scottish universites, Uclan or H&K.
I still recommend reaching to the ones you interested in to double check they will accept it for the Oct 25.

Good luck!

I don’t know why people go on Reddit to whine and whinge when the reality is those very people can’t be bothered putting in the hard work for access to higher education and blame everyone else for their own failings. I did this course and received nothing but kindness and support and I’m sitting at Surrey at the moment. A big complaint was the time to mark coursework but for 20GBP a unit you get next day marking. That’s a choice and a drop in the ocean when compared to university fees of 10k

Surrey vet medicine. I went with LD. people are complaining that they have to put their own hard work in. At vet school we are expected to get on with it and most of our course is self study requiring self motivation for learning and finding placements. LD aligns more closely with this ethos than the college providers. For vet science those who don’t feel supported by LD are in for a rude awakening at vet school.

Hi, how did you get on with your course out of interest? (And congrats, by now you'll hopefully have finished!)

I'm looking at the same course with ESC; seems it's pretty much the exact same course as LearnDirect but just over £5k rather than roughly £1.5k - is the only different that LD don't accept Advance learner loans (that you know of?).

At the stage of applying so would be helpful to gain some insight - been trying to self-study in advance and probably over-thinking it all! Haha!
