I will going to University in September and I'm really looking forward to it but I have alot of worries about it. I know I can do all the academic stuff but I just worry about how assignments like laying them out. I wonder if university lectures help you with that?

I also worry about the social side of university. I'm not a big drinker and I suffer from bad social and general anxiety. Do universities offer support with this?

Depends what course you are doing.

You can get books on writing essays and doing dissertations.
They will give you guidance on any specific formats they require plus for written work its valuable if you understand about referencing and not plagiarising..

You should be fine. Just ask.

Dont worry about not drinking you dont have to and there will be plenty of other non drinkers as well. there will also be lost of nervous anxious people eager to make friends in the first month or so. It tends to tail off after that.

Maybe you could work on a strategy where you will push yourself a bit to make friends so you dont get left behind, Joining clubs and societies is a good way to go plus making fiends with people on your course. If you push yourself it can get you more confidence which will prevent you being so anxious.

Theres always a welfare team who can offer support plus a mental health team if it gets out of hand. Try and use the summer into having a positive strategy so you know how you will deal with making friends and your first months away. Plenty of students are anxious so you wont be alone and plenty come through it just fine.

Hi @Indigo707

I know it can be worrying starting university, however we have a lot of support available at Manchester Met to help you with things such as academic study and assignments

Lecturers will be available for you to chat to about any problems with assignments, and we have online resources covering many aspects of study skills. As well as this, each Faculty has a Student Support Officer who is available throughout the year to provide advice on a number of things including the following:

Presentation Skills

Essay writing

Exam tips

Dealing with stress

Managing your time

You can find more information on the Student Support Office within your Faculty at http://www.mmu.ac.uk/sas/studentservices/student-support-officers.php.

With regards to the social side of things, we are a large University, so there are a number of opportunities to meet people outside of drinking and going out. You may want to look into joining a society. We have over 70 different societies, including a debate society, yoga society, film society and rock society . These are a great way to meet like minded people and each society will hold different events throughout the year which are great fun

You may also be interested in joining one of our 60 sports teams.

For those who are worried or do suffer from anxiety, we offer a Counselling, Health and Wellbeing service which is made up of a number of qualified counsellors and mental health advisors They are there to offer advice to our students and to help with any issues relating to health and wellbeing. They also run a number of workshops such as Anxiety Buster, and Overcoming Social Anxiety, which are free for students to attend.

All in all, there is a lot of support available, and like @999tigger said, many people will be feeling anxious so you won't be alone. Just try to relax and enjoy yourself over the summer and hopefully when you come to us in September you will have a great time!! :h:

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
