Ahh. Yeah I think they used to be sort of useful, not anymore though. Maths is alright - I'm taking further maths as part of my Access :3 Give me a shout if you need a hand at all :biggrin:

Thank you. I think if I pass it would be the achievement of a lifetime! Just bit worried about it stopping me from going on to uni.

I did an access course in 2015-16 and it's the best thing I ever did! Did access to health professions and am now about to start my second year studying speech and language therapy at Sheffield university.

If anyone has any questions about access feel free to ask! I'm sure you won't regret it. :smile:

Hello

I have just completed an access course in science, it was predominantly biology and chemistry, but physics, maths and a study skill module were thrown in too! I did this along side a maths GCSE.

It was a great experience, some times very challenging and overwhelming though. At one point we had 2 assignments, 1 exam and 1 presentation all in for the same week!! :redface:

Plus some poor people had assignment re-submissions on top of that lol.

Around half the original class dropped out in total, the main reason being that they did not feel they could keep up or no confidence in themselves. For some people who have been out of education a long time or have never been particularly academic, maybe an introduction to access or making sure you have maths, English, science GCSE to begin with is a good idea. The "survivors" however, mostly came out with distinction grade work.

The most important thing is to work as a team with people in the class, start a group chat and support each other. I don't think i would have made it without the support of the group.
I have already been to university before (left in the 3rd year), but i actually feel like this course was more intense and has prepared me much better second time around!

You probably won't be the only 19 year old. Most Access students are in their twenties, so even if you are the youngest, you won't stand out. People don't pay much attention to age on Access courses anyway.

I had my induction this week and just want to get started now. It's a relief to finallly have the timetable and know what subjects we will be studying, in the first half of the year anyway. I am really pleased as we will be doing History and Philosophy; which is what I want to study at uni.

The waiting is killing me though :smile:

There were about 23 people at the induction (I think only 1 missing when he went through the names).

I haven't started my personal statament yet. Our tutor said if we wanted to start preparing for the course we should aim to read 1 broadsheet newspaper opinion article a day, the way they are written is a good style to emulate for writing essays, he also gave each of us the 'Palgrave Study Skills The Student's Guide to Writing' to help us.

Yes, I quite like Stephen King but I haven't read Rose Madder yet..will have to at some point.

It's a good book, has been years since I read it though, currently making my way through The Dark Tower novels.

LOL, I didn't realise what 'broadsheet' newspaper was either, tutor suggested The Hearald or The Guardian. Normal news articles are where a story is reported with the facts and an unbiased view, opinion articles are where someone is writing about their opinion of the news story (or of anything currently trending).

If you google 'guardian opinion article' you can see the most recent and read them free.
