But at the same time...

Oooft.

Superb, and if we're going for conforming to the OPs suggestion, always go for comedy:

But metal is very diverse. Can't believe there's anyone who genuinely doesn't like any metal. Like with rap, given that's just a singing style there's gotta be someone who does it who's work you like.

Power metal, though? Helium sucking, ball-grabbing gimps wailing about slaying dragons and fighting mythical battles. Deep.

I jest. But only slightly.

;-)

I honestly couldn't care less what you think of power metal, but just know that not all of them sing about slaying dragons lol.
Generally speaking, In the mainstream I don’t think anyone has come close to good songwriting since Noel Gallagher came about.

100% agree. I have a bunch of metal purist mates that refuse to hear anything else and it is infuriating. I'll give anything a go, me.

I guess at least Powerwolf go on about religion.
This is nothing new. Even all the songs on the radio 15 years ago were about sex.

Videos are getting 'sexier'

The business has gone from selling physical units based on what they sounded like on the radio via selling physical units based on how good your video looked... and now as a recording artist you make money by getting people to click on your video - preferably repeatedly.

didn't really matter what Aretha Franklin, Dion Warwick or Roberta Flack looked like... these days it's apparently very important that female singers have had the 'correct' plastic surgery and shake their butts at the camera a lot.
Radio and domestic TV were always hamstrung by regulation and generally kowtowing to whoever granted their funding or license, Cable/Satellite widened that market a bit and then the internet kicked the doors off it completely.

A good example is The Simpsons, over 25 years odd you can see them slowly get more and more comfortable using adult situations, references and language as the market adapted, again later animated shows like Family Guy and Southpark pretty much kicked the doors off.

They're not, though - again, it was the same 15 years ago. Look up the music videos for Christina Aguilera - Dirrrty, Tamia - Stranger in my house, Hole - Be a man, Britney Spears - Womanizer and a whole load of other pop and R&B tracks released in that period. The shift into the new millennium was the starting point of sexually oriented music videos becoming mainstream.
sex sells better than quality music

why is the pron industry so successful?
sex sells more than meaningful videos

Madonna - Erotica before that as well.
Sex sells.

I don't really care if the song about sex if it bops. Today most young people relate to sex so artist write about it. It seem to work as many song are hits.
