Hi I am a current CS and joined last year at EO level. I has been advised by parity to apply externally if your priority streams are - GSS, GORS and GRS. Is that true. Someone within CS applying externally?
Follow, And hi everyone
I don't remember from earlier application, but is it possible to request part time hours say around 30 per week.
Hi Vexper, great to see a friendly face!

Yeah, I noticed a few changes including the e-tray being changed to 2 "work based situations" (although the description makes it sound quite similar to the e-tray but with more office based / less volcano disaster type situations), and Diplo has become a 2 year scheme!

They've also updated some of the post-completion salary predictions. Diplo seems to suggest that you'll progress to a higher salary (after the scheme has finished) a lot slower than some of the other schemes.
There's a guide? Could you share the link?
I'll be applying too

Got a PM but thought my response might help others. The question was what can I do to prepare now?

"Bear in mind the first few stages (really up to FSB) are all the same for all schemes, so really you want to show how rounded you are. Think what the schemes have in common: you will need organisational, leadership, and people skills, you will need to be engaging and proactive, and most of all you need to be a team player.

Lots of people enter this having experience of private sector recruitment but you need to remember that the CS works completely differently - it's all about everyone contributing what they can for the public good not about winning or scoring points against others. This is really key for the situational judgement and behaviour tests at the start especially!

So focus on the Success Profiles as they give you a good flavour of the person they want - look at Grade 7/6 as that's the job you get at the end of the scheme. You don't need to know it word for word but it should put you in the right frame of mind.

To get more specific practice the tests online (there's loads of free ones). Take your time - if I remember rightly they weren't timed so you can go get a cup of tea, pace, calm yourself down etc. between questions. Most of the questions the key is working out what the wider problem is.

Say you get told an apprentice is struggling on a project with time management. You will typically have options such as support them on the project, give the project to someone else, or arrange longer term support for the time management skill. Most people think of the problem as the project not being delivered, and yes this is important and effective responses tackle this. But the most effective responses also solve the underlying problem, the skill gap. So look at whether each option resolves the short term problem or also the long term problem.

It's these strategic and long term planning leadership skills that they are looking for. "Seeing the Bigger Picture" is a good Behaviour to look at for this. This is why focusing on the Success Profiles is really all you can do for now, besides maybe grabbing opportunities for things to talk about at interview in your current role.

I would also advise you really research the schemes and think about what you want for the next 4 years. The order is very important and you should put what you really want first and go from there. If you're not interested in a scheme don't put it down just to fill up the slots - it's really a waste of your time if ultimately you either get rejected at FSB because you don't have the passion or worse you get an offer and start and hate it.

I hope that helped for now - there's not really much prep you can do except think about what you want and what they want. I'm more than happy to help again later down the line, or with Comms, if you want to message back"

Congrats on your new role! I was going to PM you but this is great advice, thank you for being so helpful and sharing your experience.
They've updated the website - applications open on the 26th September!

Hi Everyone, I'll be applying for the Fast Stream this year. I don't work in civil service right now but would really love to join soon. I see application dates have been published now and I was thinking of prioritising the schemes as Communication service > Digital, Data & Tech > Generalist > Commercial.

I would really appreciate some first hand info if anyone is / has worked in these areas in government before. Thanks!

Hello Alex congrats on the communication scheme.

Can you give any advice for standing out from the crowd as many people apply for the same role .. or any tips on what experiences I should highlight in the application process ?

Hi Aimee,

Not so much the standing out but in terms of experiences to highlight focus on how what you have done shows leadership and strategic thinking.

So say you've delivered some training. Don't just say you've delivered training, explain how you organised the training, evaluated it, what lessons you learned from it, what the wider implications of the training were. A Grade 7 (the level you would finish the scheme at) once told me you should apply the "So what?" principle - if you hadn't had done that would anything have been any different? You need to lay out these connections for the assessor.

Saying that the first chance you get for this is the video interview so there's plenty of stages before that!

It might sound strange saying there's nothing I can advise to make you stand out but realise the first few stages are online tests so whether you pass is based on your score. Later on what I've said above about strategic thinking is often missed by people who assume the assessor is making the connections themselves and not spelling it out for them, so you will stand out by doing that. At assessment centre think about how you are interacting with everyone else, the Civil Service is very focused on how you are a supportive team player and bringing out the best in others, if someone is struggling in a group exercise help them out! It sounds silly but if you're used to regular assessments then you might be tempted to just be glad there's less competition.

Hi everyone. All really useful advice!! Thanks so much!
I'm struggling between whether to put Project Delivery or Communications first. The website is pretty vague about the roles and haven't been able to find much online. Can anyone offer any insight into either or these schemes?

Thanks in advance!

Hey all, I’m about to start Year 2 of the FS, I’m a generalist so happy to answer any questions. Apologies to anyone who may have PMed me recently and have not had a reply; RL has gotten in the way! Please resend or quote me here

Hello! If I am applying for the generalist scheme, diplomatic and HoC - will i need to do a numerical reasoning test do you know? i've even asked the civil service via fb but kind of unsure on the answer as it's sort of unclear and don't want to risk not practising for them! Thanks

Hi everyone!!
Has anyone found any good practice Situational Judgement Tests? The one's I've found are totally irrelevant to public sector jobs.
Also, is anyone applying to any other Parliament schemes - e.g. the HM Treasury Policy Adviser role?

They took like 400 generalists for my start year (2018), it makes me wonder why no chances are given for the specialist schemes.

Please remind me again, for I have a memory like a sieve, did you get an offer last year or are you trying again? I'm hoping the thread this year doesn't become too controversial!

Back at it again for attempt number 3!

First time: failed at video interview
Second time: withdrew cause went abroad
Third time: TBC!

I've been a bit disheartened cause i've applied for several civil service jobs outside of fast stream that I also haven't gotten. I seem to want them more than they want me haha
having seen the whole process with my partner last year, and joining the CS through a different process myself, I've decided to give this a go in 2019 for the diplomat scheme... I'm currently learning Japanese, my long term goal being to try and get some good experience to try get a CS job out there.

My question is this - does anyone know which offices the diplomat postings can be in? Is it literally any of them? Seems a lot to choose from. I wonder if they'd put you in one closer to home, or but you in one more relevant to your language experience...

For the Diplomat Scheme, you have no choice but to be in London for the first 2 years. After that, you apply to postings all over the world and potentially get accepted/declined depending on your application and each embassy's requirements.
