There are lots of different ways to get student discounts - from showing your student card in shops to getting codes from specialised apps. I'd highly recommend downloading the Unidays and Student Beans apps to start out since these are both free.
Check out the discounts from NUS Totem card as well - the card costs money but is worth it if you often use some of the discounts that only accept it! If you do a lot of travel, definitely sign up for a 16-25 railcard and/or a student oyster card, too.
To be honest, the best thing you can do is to get in the habit of always asking businesses if they offer a student discount before you make a purchase. I've gotten so many cheap student deals on shows that I didn't realise offered a discount - it never hurts to ask!

How does the 16-25 railcard work etc? i have one but never used it because i don't understand how it works especially in London where there are zones 1-9

For London go to a Tube station and ask a member of staff to add it to your Oyster. Outside London just show it at the ticket office or press add railcard on the machine to get 34% off (before 09:30 there's £13 minimum except in July/Aug).

You can apply for the 16-25 railcard if you are within that age range or a mature student in full time study. It costs £30 a year (or £70 for 3 years) and gets you 1/3 off of all off peak rail travel. I usually use it when I'm going out of London, but you can also get it connected to your oyster card (if you speak to tfl staff in the station they can do this for you) and you can use it for 1/3 off of off peak pay as you go tube journeys (does not include weekly/monthly travelcards).
The 18+ student oyster card is a good thing to get if you travel around London a lot at peak times, as this would get you 1/3 off travelcards (but does not give you any money off pay as you go fares).
