Purple Card = able to join societies, offers in LUSU and around Lancaster, has NUS written on it so it is a proper form of student ID.
NUS Card = offers nationwide / easily recognisable student ID.
Sugarhouse Card = offers at the Sugarhouse.

I'd probably say the Purple Card is essential. NUS is only really good if you will use the offers they have like discounts on Amazon. Sugarhouse card is expensive [around £40 a year isn't it?!] so maybe leave that for your first year in case you don't like Sugar or don't go often. Or, go for it and socialise to the max in your first year lol! I went to Sugar a few times but never paid as it was after things like Friday Fury - personally, I liked other places in town instead so it wouldn't be worth it for me.
kk thanks

Sorry for thread hijack but this is kinda in the same vein, I was tight in my first year and only got the card for a year rather than 3. I want to get one to cover my next two years, but when I try to sign up (putting my current card no etc) it only offers a one year one. Is this normal?

mine just arrived today :P got the 3 yr one.
The NUS card is good for when you are shopping away from lancaster, I found shops in my hometown wouldn't accept the purple card yet would accept the NUS card.

That is normal. They were offering the chance to get your card extended until the end of your course but only until week 6 of summer term. Now you can only get the one year card. It states so here.
This page lists all the offers currently available with the purple card - looks like there are some good ones this year.

And of course the form doesn't recognise either my UCAS ID or the student ID....this correlates well with my attempts to sign up for accommodation, and I was told I didn't even know my own date of birth.

Have you tried using the student ID listed on your accommodation offer? I was having probelms and as a last resort typed that in and it worked.

I ordered mine the first day i could and my boyfriend did a coupkle of days later, he got his last week and i havent got mine yet! Aparently they actually sent me the card so i guess royal mail lost it! i dont really know what to do now...i cant afford to buy another one!
Having read the thread, i understand there's more of a need for the purple card as opposed to the nus card. HOWEVER, with my lloyds bank account i get a free nus extra card for the year, so i'll obviously get that. Do i still need the purple card, as it's compulsory for some societies? Can't I just use the NUS extra card?

Yes you need it to join societies. If your not joining then you don't need it but you may as well.

I got the Purple Card for 3 years (it saves £7.50 that way yay ) and I got the NUS Card, but just for this year only, just to see how often I'll actually use it!

I think NUS is probably going to be a suitable card for me, as you get (amongst others):
- 5% discount from Amazon and Play (online), up to the value of £1500
- 10% discount at Matalan stores. That way you get relatively cheap clothes even cheaper
- 10% discount at Staples (useful for my ink!!) or 25% discount at Comet, though it doesn't end up as cheap as Staples
- Discount at the cinema (for at home), including an extra 10% discount off Student price (I think this is a one off thing though)
- Discount on CrossCountryTrains = cheaper train tickets too, especially alongside my railcard

So it works out well  There's quite a few more. You might decide it could be worth getting it for this one year, and seeing how often you use it too

I'm trying to sign up for a purple card, but I don't know my UCAS Personal ID number.. The only number Lancaster quote in their correspondance was to use when applying for accomodation. I tried it anyway, but to no avail. Anyone know how I'd find it out? Any help would be appreciated!

(Sorry if I'm being a complete spacker)

The number you used to apply. The same number you use for UCAS Track.
