Do art, a mate of mine is a games designer and he said that people would be suprised how much gets sketched out beforehand, by everyone involved, not just specific drawing people.

lol, I'm just saying because when I was about 14 I wanted to be a game designer, you just grow out of it, even though I waste alot of my time playing games... There's more important things in life..

Well some of us don't grow out of it:p:

It's my dream though, i've been doing projects in geography and presenting a game that we made and we got good marks. We didn't exactly make a game phsically but we created the desgins, monsters, production factories, researched where we could buy land, we even created shop ideas and HQ layouts, it took forever though. I think i can do this.

P.S Ours was 1st!

Are these subjects good for GCSE if i want to be a games designer as a career? Accountant is my back-up plan and then McDonalds and then suicide. (i'm in year 9 and i'm returning my reply in 2 weeks):

Maths - I'm good with this, really really good! (i can do A level algerbra questions - no sweat at all)
Science - Double science or maybe Triple
English - Not so good seeing this as my second language
Technology (Compulsory in my school, is it in yours?) Graphics for Games Desginer?
ICT - Multimedia, for Games Designer?
German - I want to learn more languages, i know 3 languages fluent: Mandarin, Cantonese, English:p: and i'm still learning German.
_________ - I don't know this one, Business? Geography (i enjoy this)? R.E? did i mention Business?

Please give me some advice please because i want to return the favor back to my parents seeing as my dad works like hard labour to support our family:eek: .

Are those subjects a good choice? Can you help me with that extra gap for a subject too? Thank you very much.:woo: :woo: :woo:

Wtf you know Mandarin? :O WOW
Umm, GCSE isn't that important tbh
You should think of what subjects you need to choose your A-level subject but yes, the subjects you picked are perfectly okay
Extra subject? Hmm, if you really want to show yourself off, then do the science separately and take anything else you might like (it doesn't even matter if it is dance as you are already taking "good" subjects)

I wouldn't plan to be a game designer now I would do a degree in graphic design or something and specialise.

I'm chinese so i get a sort of advantage for knowing 3 languages already! :yep:
Maybe for extras can you do
Additional maths
Core Sciences
Do triple sciences - if you handle x3 the work load

Extras
a language - french maybe, german or whatever your school do
Artic or graphic design depending on what they do. Art is another good subject but it takes up a lot of time.
ICT/Computing based gcse or a GNVQ/BTEC depending on what you can do
You sounded like you like Business so take that if you want

Probably the worst career route one can take.

I do not know what "Science" involves but Physics should be a must for you. Most modern games involve algorithms that are based upon the laws of Physics so this will help you greatly. Plus, don't narrow down your future degree/career so much. You can study Computer Science and become a competent games designer as well.

You're 13? Alot of people wanted to do this at age 13, even me! But then by A-Level time you think logically and reality hits you and you're true ambitions come out. This is one of those kiddie dreams. You might just pursue it tough, never know....

If you take Art it will teach you how to become faster with your skills. Life drawing and still life drawing are major bonuses same as going out and doing observational drawing.
You don't think people got those jobs without the traditional degrees first do you? Things like Fine Art degrees and the more traditional art degrees are what got those people there in the first place really. A game design degree is fairly new. I know plenty of people who want to aspire to be a manga artist or something along those lines and think you don't need to know the basics before going into those areas but you do.

I'm aiming to be an art teacher it took me a lot of time to decide what I wanted to do. When I was your age my desired career was journalism, so much can change between now and a levels you might discover your love for something else or that you find an area of textiles more fun than game designing.

I agree with this so much, I cannot stress how important life drawing is! If you are serious about getting a job at a games company you will need some really good life drawing in your portfolio/showreel.

As I said in my earlier post, my uni does a games art degree, as part of their animation programme. I'm on the traditional animation course rather than games art, but we're taught together a lot of the time and most of my friends are on the games course. The most important thing they want from applicants is a good portfolio - they would much prefer you to have good art skills rather than a vast technical knowledge, because it's easier to teach someone the technical stuff from scratch rather than the art stuff.

Hey I am the same age 14 and I'm British . I've been learning programmes since I was 9, the design since I was 10. I'm OK at math pretty good at algebra. You will need to learn everything from top to bottom, tech is very high now and programming fields are desperate because our gen are the ones who learn all of this . heck I know how to fix laptops and build good ones. You need to practice for all of this. I have had job experience at IBN because my cousin works there . the salary is omfg amazing. Play lots of games to understand it all and learn about every console from top to bottom trust me I've signed to be in a London programming academy so this is what I'm gonna doXx

General advice: be well-rounded.

Tom Sloper has published a useful series of articles on game design that will help you to, firstly, understand what game designers do, secondly, understand the key skills that are involved, and thirdly, identify a pathway to becoming a designer.

Additionally, if your aspiration is to work in the digital games industry, then computing is particularly useful. Nearly all of the professional game designers I know leverage computational thinking skills to formulate mechanics and structure play experiences. Likewise, they also implement and play-test their own prototypes.

All the best,
Michael
The gaming industry is bigger than it has ever been. You can make good money and enjoy it at the same time. He can do whatever he desires if he puts enough work towards it.

Good subjects in general, although games designer ? come on mate, you can do alot better. Game desigining is not a taken professionally its not "solid enough" not really a ideal career. Something like Doctor , teacher etc dentist they are good careers long time support and always in need. I suggest you change your career ? The subjects are supposed to be taken anyway... good subjects, its not like your taking Alevelz or something...

Don't crush his dreams. Let him be what he wants to be. It's been 11 years though so I wonder what he's doing now.
