Usually people only get unconditional offers if they have completed the qualifications they have put down on UCAS, but correct me anyone if I'm wrong?

Yes, if you apply the year after you take your A-levels (e.g. during a GAP year) you are likely to get an unconditional offer if the university wants you. But people do get unconditional offers during their A2 year, somebody at my school got an unconditional offer for English a couple of years ago because he wrote his personal statement in iambic pentameter. It's fairly rare though, you need to show outstanding potential, and be a general genius.
