Xaverian vs Loreto

Hi,

I currently have been offered a place at both Xaverian College and Loreto. I am looking at taking A Level Physics, Maths, Computing and Theology. I would like to know if anyone has any information besides what is on the websites/prospectus/open days.etc. Ideally if anyone on here has attended these colleges or are currently attending, I would appreciate your input .

In my opinion, Loreto is easier to get to than Xaverian, but the bus journey is longer. Xaverian seems to have more stuff near it than Loreto. Loreto has a better campus in my opinion and seems to be very modern. Xaverian seems to be university like, with its multiple buildings.etc. Both are really good colleges and I can't decide....

Both very similar - go to the one that's easiest/quickest to get to.

Id say Loreto is easier to get to, but Xaverian is quicker to get to...
I got offered places too, and to Aquinas and Parrs wood.
I've decided to go to Xaverian :} Quicker, the courses I want to do, a lot of friends going, and I like the uni styled campus.
I'm going to Xaverian

Hi there! I currently go to Xaverian and I really do recommend coming here.
Out of the subjects you do, I do Maths. The maths department is excellent - the booklets and teacher support is a big thumbs up.

I initially took computing as a 5th as but I dropped it. I don't mean to put you off but - the teacher I had was terrible (but trust me, thats the only downside!.. the other teacher is great, just a shame I didnt get her).

As for theology, I don't really know much about it but my tutor teaches theology and he's a nice guy. & Physics, alot of my friends do physics and they love their teachers - so im sure you'll enjoy it.

For every subject there is ALOT of subject support available, and all the teachers I have are more than willing to take time out to help you.

As for Loreto - I can't really comment, although I think they force you to do general studies? However, this is optional at Xaverian.

If you are quite a "high achiever" (sorry, don't know how else to word it, I don't mean for it to sound pretentious!), there are lots of things to help push you.
By this I mean - stretch and challenge programmes, Oxbridge mentoring, optional to take general studies and EPQ, etc.

College days are 9-4 every day, except one day where you start at 10.30, and one day where you will finish at 3. There is an enrichment block on wednesday afternoon 1.15 till 3 where you can do all sorts from chess, public speaking, art, rugby, table tennis, learn italian, etc. (But lucky you if you have the lesson at 3 oclock free, as you get to go home at 1.15 ).

The journey is a bit of a pain but you get used to it. It personally takes me an hour to get home everyday (luckily I get a lift in the morning).
But if the college is better (sorry loreto ) its worth it

Anyway, this is turning into a major ramble!
Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions.

Hey, I currently attend loreto college so I can give you information about that. Sorry it's a bit late.. Anyway out of your subjects I do both maths and theology. The Maths department is absolutely outstanding. I have found that over these last two years, there has always always always always been somebody around to help with any maths queries which you may have. if you are struggling at all they will immediately put you into extra help classes, also even if you are just struggling on one topic they hold drop in sessions every lunch time for anything which you may need help with. The teaching standard is also outstanding (which is sometimes hard to find with maths). Also, if you don't like one teacher there is always others who even if they don't know you are willing to help.

As for theology, it is a bit of a mixed plate. Over the past few years the theology department has struggled with achieving the higher grades and a lot of A grade students were achieving C's (including me). However they have now changed exam boards and have achieved the best AS theology results they have ever got, so hopefully it is improving. Despite this Mr Vaughn (head of theology) is absolutely lovely. Every exam season he stays behind until 6pm after college without fail to provide crash course revision sessions which are always useful (alongside your own revision of course).

I think that both of computing and physics both have good departments but I can't comment too much on that...

As for the college on a whole, if you want to get involved in stuff there is always a lot going on - debate club, charity events, various trips and shows.. They also hold a day every year called mary ward day which is basically an all expenses paid trip to various different places which is always fun. Also, they have one day at the end your AS year to visit a choice of universities.

I don't know if you would be involved in oxbridge but if you are there is a huge amount of support for the whole application and interview. However, where ever you apply there is a mass of support with personal statement, application and probably interviews as well... I would definitely recommend loreto college. It takes me and hour and half to travel there everyday and it is 100% worth every second! Also it is top with ofsted and league tables

Hope this helps ?

I currently go Loreto and i study Maths, Further Maths and Physics and i ak part of a high achiever programme. I would strongly recommend Loreto as every department i study in has a lot of support when needed. One thing about Loreto is they tend to have more trips compared to Xaverian. They are both amazing colleges with excellent education so choose where u think u can study with less distractions but also make sure u have some friends u can socialise with.
