It depends what uni you go to, but tests happen all the way through. In some English uni's you get a QTS test at the end and if you fail it then you don't get QTS basically.

I'm at Newport and we have 'Key Skills' assignments each year - maths, english, ICT. During the years we also have to do maths and english audits, which aren't too bad.

I'd say look at Newport, even if you're not interested in it, just to look at the structure of how it is run.

Aren't the government changing it though? You're now required to do the QTS tests before you even start any course leading to qualified teacher status.

Ah what are the tests and assignments throughout your course like? My friend has just completed his course, he didn't have any specific 'tests', just assignments like you said.

Seems a little pointless to do it before hand though!! Problem with education, government changes it very often :P But the majority of Uni's in interviews have maths and english tests that are a requirement to do beforehand, so it cant be that different I guess.

That's cool (: some of our assignments are much harder than others, but the course isn't that assignment heavy. We have ones between 1000 words and 4000 words, in one we had to write about the importance of two subjects with examples of how we have successfully taught them. It's all really relevant so thats always a bonus

I know! Suppose it weeds out the ones lacking the skills early on though.... xD

Yeah a lot of the ones I've looked at have stated they have those sort of tests at the interview anyway, not something I'm looking forward to in all honesty, ha!

Oh well those assignments sounds alright, especially if it's relating back to you and how you teach! Can see what you mean with it being relevant! And that's not like it's a horrendous word limit, so it sounds ok!

Hey I am looking to do primary education next year and have looked at BG in Lincoln, Oxford Brookes, Northampton, Hertfordshire and Chester and so far I have preferred BG and OB, although Northampton allows me to specialise in PE which I would enjoy doing - going to see York St.John and edge hill sooooon
Hi! I went to see sheffield Hallam the other day which looks pretty awesome, for anyone wanting to look up north. Also saw Chester which was just as great! Looking at Manc met, Northumbria and possibly York st John as well. How much work experience has everyone done??

Aw nice! What did you think of them? What sort of stuff did they tell you on the open days?

I've done an afternoon ever week for 8 months (Oct-May.) That adds up to about... 64 hours I think? I've also got a full week arranged for me in a primary school at the end of July too! What's everyone else done?

They were both really good! Sheffield is right in the centre, literally down the road from primark haha  and Chester is a cute city but still loads in it, and the course is really good. They basically outline the course and tell you what they can offer you. And I've done 13 days since finishing my exams  Went to see Manchester met on wed if anyone wants to know what it's like!

For most of the interviews you have to sit a maths and english test anyway. They're not too hard, mainly just addition, subtraction etc. No harder than anything at GCSE. And you get scrap paper too.
If you need advice for any of the interviews flick through the 2012 thread, and I'm happy to help too

Hey everyone

I've just finished my first year doing Primary education at Bishop Grosseteste if you have any questions just say

Omg I went to the BG open day a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it! The atmosphere there is just what I'm looking for and it's defiantly going to be my first choice!

How much of the course is actually learning to teach rather than learning what u u've to teach?

Firmed St Mary's in Twickenham. And York St John is my backup  (but I also had interviews at Canterbury Christ Church and Kingston)

you can take the skills tests up to 3 times and to pass you need 63% that's what I just read on edge hill'a website so I presume that's how it works for all of them
Had my first day of work experience in a Primary School- really loved it. First shock of the day- found out they were going on a trip and went with them, even had my own group to look after and do activities with- loved it- shattered now though

Oooh what did the Kingston interview involve? That's one of my top 3 choices I'm looking to apply for at the minute!

Hey  You firstly all go into a big room and have an overview of the course. You're then seperated into groups of about 20 to go do the tests. There's a maths (10 simple questions; addition, subtraction etc. and you have scrap paper) and an English test (mark a child's work, and write the correction and type of mistake it was. eg. "Their" should be there. grammar) you then do 2 little group tasks, whilst being observed. Both times you're given a clue each and have to work together to get to the answer. you have scrap paper as well. Try not to take over on the group tasks, but don't say nothing either. Look at others when they're talking, and don't cut in at all.
You are then taken to your subject specialism rooms, and are given a breif overview of the subject. You're then interviewed individually. Questions are standardised - why kingston, why should they choose you, your extra curricular activities, education in the news (people were discussing this whilst waiting so if you don't have any then you could nick a few? :L but try and get some anyway, they'll help for all the interviews even if you're not asked specifically about it)
Good Luck

I applied for 2012 entry though didn't get where I wanted (got a few offers but not from anything I really wanted to go).
I am re-applying for entry in 2013 and am applying for:
Northampton.
Chester.
Plymouth Marjon.
Hull - Scarborough campus.
York St John.

Hopefully I'll stand a better chance this time because I'll actually have my A-level results before applying.

Hey
just wondering if anyone is planning to study primary education next year and where abouts you are thinking about applying to?
I have looked at Bishop Grossestest Lincoln, Gloucester, Oxford Brooks but are there any more good one i should be looking at?
Lotti

Hi, I was just wondering if you have considered the university of Derby as a prospective choice. I will hopefully be starting there this September and it seems SO, SO, SO great  (sorry if this uni has already been mentioned but i haven't read all of the posts). Its ok if you haven't i just though i would throw it out there because it is an exceptional course for primary education, so if your 100% sure that's what you want to do, it might be worth considering?

If you are interested then here are some links about the course, and why its one of the best providers to study primary education (if your not interested just ignore this bit :L)

P.S. If you are interested in applying here (or even other institutions) and want to know about their interview process, what happens and stuff, then let me know
I'm about to go into my second year at Edge Hill. I also applied to UWE, Chester, York St John and Manchester Met. Quote or pm me if you have any questions  x
Original post by Harriet : )
UWE = University of the West of England  It's on the outskirts of Bristol
I live in Swindon atm

Hai I just wanted to wish you good luck, seen as I am also a Swindonian, and had an interview @ UWE! (I'm in Newport now though, look in to it if you like Wales)

You're going to have such great fun if it's anything like it is here  Just finished my first year and WOW. Intense but amazing.
