The Spanish vocabulary thread: 5 words a day!

I'm looking for new ways to come across new vocabulary. If everyone posts 5 Spanish words a day, and learns the 5 words posted by the previous person, it should help everyone :biggrin:

prescindir de: to manage without
amargo: bitter
alfigido/a: afflicted
una disuasión: a deterrence
el secuestro: the kidnapping
aumentar: increase
la amistad: friendship
el trastorno: disorder. Can also refer to a mental disorder
la licenciatura: a degree
un sacapuntas: a pencil sharpener
consumismo: consumerism
suponer: suppose
como tal: as such
cierto: true
tomar conciencia de: to be aware of
