SOAS or Sussex for Social Anthropology?

Hi, I am EXTREMELY confused about which uni to choose... does any one have any comments? I am looking for a good degree but to also have a good time.

I would choose SOAS if you're concerned more about the course, I think it has an awesome reputation and specialises in global subjects like anthropology, but that's not to say you won't get a good degree from Sussex. Not everyone is suited to London universities so that's definitely something to bear in mind, I chose Sussex because it felt like it had a stronger community and I absolutely love Brighton as a place. If you get a chance, visit both and get a feel for them!

I have already visited them both but am still confused haha! What do you study at Sussex? I think I am leaning more towards Brighton at the moment, but feel like I prefer the course at SOAS?

I'm starting anthropology in September  I reckon if you feel like you would fit in better in Brighton go for that because it's still a really well respected course.
I just googled SOAS out of interest - it has a really high percentage of mature and international students and also has less than half the number of students of Sussex, so that's something to think about in terms of social life! Obviously I'm a little biased though haha. I think Brighton for social life, SOAS for the course, depends what's most important to you.
I had a similar choice - Sussex or Exeter for anthropology - and went with Sussex. I figured, at the end of the day, a degree's a degree, they're both pretty well respected in the field, but Brighton looked like a lot more fun

Now just whether to take a gap year or not haha..... too many decisions!
Hi! I am currently studing at sussex (anth. and International Dev.) and had the same choice, and Im glad I came here! SOAS is incredibly well respected but we have a great department here, and Brighton has a really liberal reputation which means you will meet a ton of people that are on the same wavelength. London is great, but if you are into a more chilled out atmosphere with loads going on, and are quite political as well, youll be happy at Sussex
SOAS is by definition focussed exclusively on Africa/Asia. That's fine is that's your interest but Sussex may give you a more rounded degree. Brighton is also a far more interesting place to be for three years than London. The campus is very friendly and 'village' and you'll never have that sense of loneliness so many UoL students seem to have. Cheaper housing, great nightlife/arty/music/theatre scene, great shopping, amazing seaside all year round - and its only 50 mins to London by train. What's not to like?

Hi, I know it's been a while since you wrote in this thread, though I'm facing the same dilemma in having to choose between Soas and Sussex. About the Sussex program, I have some questions, I was hoping you can answer:
- Are you allowed to take optional courses at IDS?
- what is the relation like between the different depts under the global studies institute?
- how are the courses- % of theoretical readings, practical case studies?
- how is the course load?

Would greatly appreciate your feedback!
