FWoodhouse, I think most universities require the original certificates when they ask for your GCSE/whatever to be sent. Well, I can state for certain that Christ's, Cambridge does.

Pembroke asked for originals, my certificates etc are currently in the post to my gap year job people, I make copies before I send anything important though
