Medical Student NHS Bursary

Hi, my son is a 4th year medical student in Scotland receiving his Maintenance loan from SFE, there’s no NHS bursary in Scotland but SFE has reduced his loan as if he is receiving the Bursary, he now has a shortfall of over £2k, how can he contact SFE to get the same maintenance as last year.

Hi there,

As he is an SFE/Domiciled in England ordinarily, he should be eligible for NHS funding. However, he can upload a cover letter to his account to confirm that he is not in receipt of the bursary along with any transcripts that would confirm this.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

just to clarify, if he uploads a letter to his SFE account saying he is not in receipt of the NHS bursary he will get the the SFE maintenance loan the same as previous years? What transcripts are you looking for. Thank you. It’s difficult as every time we contact SFE we get a different answer.

Hi there,

Only upload them if they are available such as a rejection email or letter for NHS funding. If that isn't available, that's ok, we can still process the cover letter, especially if it was accepted in previous years.

Thanks, Clare
