"The University offers alcohol-free accommodation to undergraduates. When living in an alcohol-free accommodation you, or your guests, are not permitted to drink alcohol within the flat. However, you can store alcohol in your room and drink alcohol outside the flat."

Basically you're not meant to drink in your room. They have a bar etc so it's not like a total ban, and I'm pretty sure people will flout it - just you'll be in more trouble if you're having a loud party..

Fairly sure this was the case for my halls last year and noone paid attention to it, nor did anyone ever enforce it.

I remember they were doing Open day in Wills and asked us all to remove 'visible' alcohol and contraband etc...
Queue my neighbor placing their entire bottle collection in the windowsill :colone: (it was extensive)
They were none to amused but did nothing.

I think that's the extent of how strict they are with most things... don't think any hall followed or enforced most of the rules, luckily

I emailed in about this, and they replied saying it is only for specific flats with the students that ask to be alcohol-free. They said alcohol is allowed 'as long as it is drank responsibly'

Tbh I felt like an alcoholic when emailing them :u:

Hahahahhahahaha  Good job emailing. That makes more sense, their statement wasn't particularly clear.
"responsibly" - how cute.
I have a number of questions. I expect some have been answered already, if so, apologies.

What do the staff consult when placing students in accommodation?

The FAQ says they consider personal statements after they've placed you into accommodation, Does that mean the personal statement submitted via UCAS?

What are the chances of not being placed into any of my three choices and what are the chances of not being placed into any of the halls at all? Who would typically not be placed in halls?

Right now I'm deciding between Durdham "Global Community" and Manor Hall as the first choice. Anyone have any experience with the "Global Community", is it just a gimmick?

Thanks.

Personal statements likely means the 200-word statement you write on the accom application form about your interests etc - they try to match you to people who they think would be a good fit.

Unless you are an insurance applicant (or apply after 31 July) you are guaranteed somewhere in halls. Some people do miss all three choices. Noone can tell you how likely, but that will obviously be increased if all 3 of your choices are particularly popular this year.

Their methods are basically randomised with some preferences for those with special needs etc. (Point 2 here)

As said, the statement refers to the one you give them on your application - it's intended to help match you to like minded flatmates.

In 2015, 86% of people got one of their 3 choices.
Might help you to look at preference list here

Had to google that Global Community thing, have a feeling it's them trying to make Durdham more popular
You'd have international students around wherever you pick, I presume they'll just place more there.
[For reference, Durdham is considered a v quiet hall]
Can't say what effect it will have tbh.

Does Bristol uni give free bus pass to people living in city centre(orchard heights, the courtroom) if anyone knows? Thanks

To reclarify now uni have replied; ALL UOB accomodation (including UNITE properties etc) will get a bus pass.
Though, as I mentioned before, it doesn't run from centre till 10am, so no use for early lectures [and I don't think they intend to change it]
@spleenharvester Guess they are still doing it
I'm coming to the end of my first year in a Clifton hall if anyone has any questions
I am joining medicine this yr ! Confused about which accommodation to choose !
Thinking of : Hawthorns 1st choice , New Bridewell 2 nod choice and Waverly as3rd choice !
Are these good choices ? I am both sporty and academic ? Will these choices suit me and are these places good for socialising ?
Where do most medics stay in first yr ?
Any suggestions would be of great help !!!!
Thanks

I've been in the largest rooms. They're certainly very nice but way overpriced imo. Haven't got any pics though.

Do you know how much nicer they are than the smaller rooms?

Is it worth £165 more a year (compared to the smaller rooms) ?

Couldn't tell you, have never seen the small rooms unfortunately! You could try emailing the accom office and asking for size measurements (that's one of the things they account for when pricing the rooms so they should have them)
Is it better to go for en suite or shared bathroom?

If you can afford it, and want one, then go for it.
Endless benefits.
Obvs when you move out to houses in 2nd/3rd year it will all be shared, so no harm getting used to it.

There is an argument that since more people ask for low price rooms, that you may stand a better chance if you have no budget of getting in... but that's merely a theory.
We're two 3rd Year University of Bristol students (medics, going into our intercalated year) looking for a third tenant in our three bed house on Kensington Place, just off Victoria Square, Clifton, as our third housemate found a last minute placement in industry so he will be moving out for the year. The house is self-furnished, but the current tenants are happy to sell the furniture in their rooms. We have agreed to buy their sofa (£20 each).Rent will be £365 a month for the room (not including bills for internet, water, electricity and gas).We are preferably looking for a male housemate, we don’t really mind what year or course, as long as they are friendly but can respect other people’s space and schedules! For further details or to arrange a viewing please contact Please contact myself (Ashar)
So you only have an hour to fill in the accommodation application form is that right!?!

I'm kinda worried about inconvenience and cleanliness of shared bathroom, did you get en suite or shared? Thanks!!
