Okey dokey people....this was originally an idea that's has been done...but its was seemingly taken over by the people who are already at Cambridge! And other unis like Durham have thriving versions of this...so i pinched their idea...hehe!

Not sure I should talk to you then, having apent more than half my life in Southampton!

There will be lots of people at your college doing it, as its one of Cambridge's triposes!

My friend Jay (who just got his 2.1 from Brighton last week :smile:

)'s daddy is a professor of geology down at the Southampton Oceanography Centre!

And I knew a geology lecturer (though he since switched to E.S.!)...

Never found the appeal of rocks personally!

cus it can tell you a story. (oh my god how cliche was that?!) Do you know what material and mineral science will be like? im dreading it because im really crap at chemistry...

tee hee i live just outside pompey, so i dont have any predjudices (sp?) towards southampton. Tis a very nice city - went to see reel big fish at the guildhall in march. HOW steep is the hill from the station to the guildhall?!

well it's essentially just looking at what makes material the way they are. To some extent thats interesting....it's things like why silicon is used to make microchips and breast implants, and so on for other materials. It includes a lot about crystal structure, and you apparently get a go with x-ray diffraction, which makes cool patterns. But the part which puts me off is that it seems to be too much "This is a rock...look at it....it is shiny....what does that suggest? Why is it shiny!?"....that just sounds boring to me. GRRR the choice is difficult. I know i'm gonna choose physics and compsci if i get in, but it dont know what my final choice will be!

doesnt sound too bad then! Physics is going to be a nightmare! have you done further maths? I havnt and i think they assume you have. Anyone got any suggestions on key bits of the further maths course that would be really helpful for the physics module of Natsci? :confused:

Used to know a guy called Dave (he's moved to Spain, but that's not relavent!)... He did a PhD in theoretical physics, the masochist! after an undergrad MSc in maths and physics... We used to sit up for hours philosophising and stuff (such that would make Plato's Symposium dull!)...

Anyway, he showed me maths he was using and it meant nothing to me... I did double maths quite a while ago (when it was more hardcore!) and this stuff was just gibberish (great dichotomy!)...
