Hey I'll start the SEFY this September. I applied to chemical engineering but I think I want to do the more mathematical route as I did really well in A-level Chemistry. Im applying through the foundation year because I didn't take A-level maths or physics!!

Oh wow. Im trying to get in without physics

So what A-levels did you do? What did you originally want to study?

Maths Geography Computing. I wanted to do some form of engineering probably before i took my gcses. Couldn't do physics by 2 marks

That's so annoying, they should have let you take it.

Have you had a look at the Pathway to Engineering programme? It involves a few weeks of physics tutoring before starting the course given that you already have A-level maths.

I don't see why not. Since you don't know which area to specialise in maybe contact the MEng Engineering course. https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/meng-engineering/studywithus/applying
The email is in the "Got questions?" Section

As morc13 said, you should really be doing the Pathway to Engineering program, honestly this is one of the best things that Sheffield offers, and as I was in a similar situation before the pathway was introduced, and had to do the foundation year, I would highly recommend going for the pathway instead if you can. It saves you a year, a bunch of student loans, it's low stress with no exams or tests or anything like that, and you'll create a bunch of friends in other engineering disciplines.

In fact I'm pretty sure if the admissions team sees you applying for the foundation year despite having the right grades with Maths included then they will just swap you over to the normal course with pathway.

edit: Though I did just realise it's limited to students in Mechanical, Aero, and General engineering, so if you're not interested in these then you might have to do the foundation year anyway, but it's also worth seeing if you could do a 1 year accelerated Physics A level instead so you can save yourself some money and work alongside etc.

Do the a level in the gap year?

Yes. It takes the same amount of time as doing the foundation year, it's lower cost, less stress, gives you more time to do a job alongside, means you spend less time at uni (5 years at one uni isn't really ideal for many reasons).

But i would be competing with those ppl with all new gcses

This will make absolutely no difference.
Hey guys also doing aerospace engineering w/foundation this year but am probably gonna get ABD (D in maths) but there requiremtns are BBB/BBC so since ABD is only a grade lower than BBB do I have a chance to get in? I would expect to as its not a popular course and we are redoing alevels basically in this year

I was told that ~70% of students in the foundation year did not take A-level maths to begin with. This course gives them the opportunity to do maths and physics to the level required for engineering in one year instead of two. I think it's a fairly popular choice.

I see, so what would be my chance with getting in with a maths alevel aswell even though it is not too good. Also the reason I said it doesnt seem popular is becauae on all the uni fb groups of sheffield I have found no one doing it yet but have found people doing courses like chinese and linguistics.
Would also like to add I have 7 gcse wirh physics and maths at A
Hey, I was wondering if we had a group chat up for the foundation year? All the other courses seem to be doing it when I checked on Facebook
