subjects like English...don't even call upon basic mathematical techniques.

Not true! If you hand write an essay you have to count the words!
I'm an arts student  I do English, History and RS and did AS German.

English is the most popular course in our sixth form. There are three classes, totalling about 40 people, and there were probably about 55 doing AS last year. History is probably the next most popular one... or maybe Biology.
I agree with the governments statement at least within my school... we have aloads of ppl doin art or sociology ( the humanities stuff) but hardly anyone doin the sciences or maths... I dunno wether our school is the norm though.
Im more of a science guy rather than art still

We have about um, 500 i think for maths and 500 for psychology, same for english lit+lang and about 250 for art.

I'm doing a mixture of subjects! Its the best way to go

At my college everyone I know seems to be doing Psychology, so I guess that would be the most popular.

I'm doing mostly sciencey subjects.. and there was a much larger intake this year at my school for sciences.

There's 19 people in my Maths class, 20 in Bio and about 15 in Chem.
Then again.. TONS of people are doing English, History etc..

I did Geography at GCSE and came across no mathmatical skills whatsoever.

So did I, but I didn't in Double award Science either . Generally I'm talking about when studying at A level or for a degree though, in which case I'm sure a certain degree of ability in Mathematics and Statistics (possibly even Mechanics for Physical Geog...) would be essential.

The media is to blame for the huge uptake of Science in my school. You hear on the news about people getting grants to do these subjects at uni and so on and so forth.

There are some very average students in my school's Science and Maths classes who think that they'll be able to walk into an exciting job that will make them millionaires by the time they are 30, just because. Perhaps that's an exaggeration but there's definitely some truth in it. I've heard some of these people say as much.

*chokes on food* 500?! Woah, you must have one almighty college! There are only 200 in my entire 6th form!

31 for each option!

Mate...arts vrs sciences, its a stupid notion
you choose a subject which you enjoy
i do arts for example, simply because i found sciences hard, GCSE level- yesi got good grades, but still the theory behind the text was complex
