Off the top of my head.

Cost.
Availability. Exhaustion/ abandonment of some sources + invention of technology to harness new sources.
Flexibility and changing energy sources mix.
No over reliance on one source.
One source unable to meet all energy needs.
Changing political, economic and societal needs.
