Nursing to therapy

I’d like to be a mental health nurse but after hearing some horror stories about abusive patients I’m thinking about doing mental health nursing then just working in occupational health as a counsellor. Is that possible with a mental health nursing degree??

You're going to get abusive patients wherever you work in any healthcare role. You're probably going to get quite a lot of them working in OH - people see you as the gatekeeper stopping them getting back to work, even though this isn't generally the case. People can get pretty angry/agitated when their salary, job and family are on the line and you are the person sitting in front of them.

If you don't want to do MH nursing then I would not suggest doing the degree on the hope of doing something else. You still need to go through the training and get your hours - something which is really hard if you don't want to do it - and there is also a very high risk that you may not be able to enter a profession like OH nursing. Training posts for specialist nursing like this are few and far between and are highly competitive. It's very likely you would need post-registration experience in order to apply.
